20 Questions to Ask Any CNC Machine Supplier

A supplier call or factory visit goes better when you arrive with the right questions. These twenty cover the ground that brochures skip, and the answers will tell you more than any catalogue. Ask them in any order, but write the answers down; vague or shifting answers are themselves information.

Factory and Capability

1. Do you cast your own machine bases, and what grade is the casting? (Resin-sand HT300 with double ageing is a good answer.)
2. Are the guideways hand-scraped and matched, or only machine-fitted?
3. Is every machine laser-tested before shipment, or only sample machines?
4. Do you run ballbar testing on each machine, and can I see the report for mine?
5. Which ISO certifications do you hold, and against which scopes?
6. What can you customise: travels, spindle, guarding, electricals, or only bolt-on options?

Machine and Specification

7. What positioning accuracy can this model hold, and is that a standard or precision grade figure? (Typical grades: ±0.01-0.02 mm standard, ±0.005 mm precision.)
8. Will the ISO 10791-series geometric test report be for my actual machine, signed and dated?
9. Which spindle taper and speeds fit my parts? (Rule of thumb: BT30 light duty, BT40 standard production, BT50 heavy cutting; 12,000-24,000 rpm for aluminium.)
10. What tool magazine type and capacity does the model carry, and what is the tool change time?
11. Which control brands do you offer, and does the price change between them?
12. Is the machine automation-ready: I/O interfaces, automatic door, space and leveling for a robot cell?

Trade and Delivery

13. What is the current lead time, and what could push it? (Custom machines commonly run 60-120 days.)
14. What exactly does the quoted price include: base machine, options, which control, packing, FOB or CIF which port?
15. How is the machine packed for sea freight: rust preventive, VCI wrap, desiccant, bracing?
16. Can you build to my local voltage and frequency, and do you recommend a stabiliser for my region's supply?

After-Sales and Support

17. What does the warranty cover, for how long, and what voids it?
18. How fast do you answer a breakdown call, and is remote diagnostics support available?
19. What is the shipping time for critical spare parts to my country, and what should I stock in year one?
20. Is operator and maintenance training included, at the factory or on site?

Adapting the List

Tailor the questions to your purchase. For a custom build, add: what changes relative to the standard model, and who signs off the final configuration sheet? For a machine bound for a tropical shop, ask what packing upgrades and cabinet protections are fitted as standard. For automation, ask which interfaces are wired during assembly versus quoted later.

Finally, score each supplier on the same sheet: answer quality, speed, evidence offered. Twenty questions asked of three suppliers gives you a comparison table no advertisement can match, and it usually makes the right choice obvious before price even enters the discussion.

How to Read the Answers

Strong builders answer quickly, in numbers, and volunteer test data without being pressed twice. Vague answers on castings, testing or warranty usually mean the machine is assembled from bought-in parts with no real quality control behind it.
