Long-Part Milling: Aerospace Beams on Gantry Machines
Milling long structural parts like beams and stringers: machine coverage, clamping across metres, deflection control and finish strategies for long cuts.
A six-metre beam does not forgive shortcuts. Long parts multiply every error source: the machine must cover the length, the clamping must hold without bending, and a single pass may run for an hour, warming the part as it goes.
Making Long Parts True
- Travel with margin: choose machine X-travel at least 10 to 20 percent over part length.
- Support every metre: adjustable rest pads under the part, set before a single cut.
- Clamp lightly at many points instead of hard at a few; bending measured before cutting.
- Finish in one pass per surface, hot-machine compensation set after a thermal soak.
Gantry machines earn their keep here. The spindle rides between two uprights over a still workpiece, so stiffness does not fade at the ends the way it does on a long cantilevered console. Symmetric heat and dual drives keep the beam square across the full length.
We build gantries for beam, rail and frame work regularly; send your longest drawing and we will show you the deflection numbers.
