ATC Reliability: The Component Buyers Forget to Check
Why automatic tool changer failures dominate unplanned downtime, and the inspection checks buyers should run before accepting a machine.
Ask maintenance teams what stops their machining centers most and the answer is rarely the spindle or the ballscrews. It is the tool changer: a mis-gripped holder, a sticky arm, a drifting sensor. ATC faults are rarely fatal, but each one wastes twenty minutes and erodes trust in lights-out running.
Checks Before You Accept
- Run 500 full tool-change cycles during the factory acceptance test.
- Measure tool clamp force with a gauge, not by feel.
- Verify air quality: dry, filtered, regulated; ATC arms are pneumatic.
- Load your heaviest tools and longest drills, then cycle them repeatedly.
Air supply deserves special attention in tropical factories. Condensation in airlines kills solenoid valves, and a failed valve stops the magazine mid-index. Refrigerated dryers and auto-drains prevent most of it for the price of a few toolholders.
Our acceptance routine includes continuous ATC cycling with your actual tool list, and we share the log with the delivery.
