How Casting Aging Protects Gantry Machine Accuracy
Why gantry castings rest and settle before they are machined: natural aging, vibration treatment and the staged machining that keeps beds straight for years.
Every BTMC gantry starts life as tonnes of iron that remembers being molten. Cooling leaves internal stress locked in the casting, and if you machine it too soon that stress releases over months, bending the bed and twisting the beam. Accuracy lost that way cannot be aligned back.
The Settling Process
- Natural aging: castings rest in the open air, letting stress relax over weeks.
- Vibration treatment: controlled resonance cycles speed up stress relief without heat.
- Rough machining, then rest: removing bulk metal unbalances the casting, so it settles again before finishing.
- Finish machining and scraping: geometry is set on a casting that has stopped moving.
The schedule costs calendar time, which is why impatient workshops skip it and why their machines drift in year two. For a gantry machining center with travels up to 8200 mm, a few millimetres of unseen bed movement translates into real flatness error across the table.
Our S and E series gantry castings follow this full aging and staged machining standard before a single guideway is ground. It is the slowest part of the build and the reason our machines hold geometry after years of heavy cutting.
Visitors can see castings at every aging stage in our yard, and we are happy to walk you through the timeline for your machine.
