China-Vietnam Machine Tool Trade: What Vietnamese Buyers Should Know

China's machine tool exports to Vietnam grew about 22.4% in 2025. Here is what that growth means for Vietnamese buyers and how to import with fewer surprises.

Vietnamese workshops are buying more Chinese machine tools every year. China's machine tool exports to Vietnam grew about 22.4% in 2025, reaching roughly USD 480 million, according to trade figures. If you run a machining shop in Bac Ninh, Binh Duong or anywhere along the industrial corridor, you have probably already compared a Chinese machine against a Japanese or Taiwanese one. This article walks through why the trade keeps growing and what you should get right before you place an order.

Why the trade keeps growing

Price for performance is the short answer. Chinese and Korean brands have pushed hard into the mid-range and entry segments, and their combined share of Southeast Asia's vertical CNC purchases rose from about 27.3% in 2022 to roughly 39.6% in 2026. For a Vietnamese job shop that needs reliable production without a Japanese-level budget, that shift matters.

Exporters also report a clear pattern in what Vietnamese buyers order first: CK6140 and CK6150 class flat bed lathes for turning work, followed by vertical machining centers for milling. Proximity helps too. Sea freight from South China to Vietnamese ports takes about 5 to 10 days, so a machine leaves the factory and arrives within two weeks.

What this means for your purchase decision

More suppliers mean more choice, but also more homework. A machine tool decision commonly runs several weeks from first Google search to final background checks. Use that time well:

  • Shortlist three or four manufacturers and compare their actual specs, not just brochure headlines.
  • Ask for the geometric accuracy test report of the actual machine, ideally based on the ISO 10791 series.
  • Check how long the company has built machines and whether casting, machining, assembly and inspection happen in-house.
  • Ask about after-sales support and spare parts availability in Vietnam.

A manufacturer like VITOP Machinery, with over 13 years of experience and a 30,000 m2 production base covering casting, precision machining, assembly and inspection under one roof, is the type of supplier profile you should be looking at. Every VITOP machine is laser-verified with laser interferometry and ballbar testing before shipment, which you can request as documented evidence.

Import mechanics you should get right

The machines are affordable; the import paperwork is where buyers lose money. Vietnam's MFN duty on machinery under HS Chapter 84 typically runs 5 to 10%, but with a Form E certificate under the China-ASEAN free trade agreement, many CNC machine HS codes drop to 0 to 5%. VAT of 10% applies on top of CIF value plus duty.

Here is a worked example. For a CIF value of USD 50,000, expect roughly USD 7,750 in duty and VAT without Form E, or about USD 5,000 with Form E. That is a saving of around USD 2,750 on one machine.

  • Form E must be issued by your supplier through CCPIT before or at shipment. There are no retroactive claims, and only originals are accepted.
  • If you are unsure about your HS code, request a pre-classification ruling. It takes about 3 to 5 business days.
  • Plan for door-to-running of 15 to 25 working days after the machine ships.

Before you wire the deposit

The growth in China-Vietnam trade is good news for buyers who do their homework. Confirm the machine configuration in writing, agree on the accuracy test standard, fix the delivery terms, and get the Form E commitment into the contract. Then the price advantage works for you instead of against you.
