Chuck Selection for CNC Lathes: Jaw, Collet and Power

How to choose workholding on a CNC lathe: three-jaw power chucks, soft jaws, collet chucks and when each gives better accuracy or cycle time.

Workholding decides more lathe accuracy than the machine itself. A three-jaw power chuck clamps fast and handles a wide diameter range, but jaw wear and centrifugal force at speed reduce grip. Collet chucks trade flexibility for concentricity, often holding five microns or better on bar work.

Matching Chuck to Job

  • Power chuck with hard jaws: heavy roughing, castings, uneven stock.
  • Power chuck with bored soft jaws: repeat batches where concentricity matters.
  • Collet chuck: bar feeding, small diameters, best roundness.
  • Face drivers or mandrels: shafts finished in one setup, both ends.

Grip length matters as much as chuck type. Short, stubby parts can be gripped lightly; long, slender shafts need tailstock or steady-rest support or they will bell-mouth the cut. Above roughly 3,000 RPM, ask for the speed-rating curve, because standard chucks lose clamping force quickly with rpm.

Tell your supplier the part family, stock form and batch size, and let them size the chuck properly rather than defaulting to whatever is on the shelf.
