CNC Lathe Swing and Length: Sizing to Your Shafts

How to size a CNC lathe to real workpieces: swing over bed versus over carriage, distance between centres, and the headstock bore that limits bar work.

Lathe names hide their sizes. A machine sold as a swing 450 may accept only 260 mm over the carriage, because the carriage walls in on diameters near the chuck. Buyers who size from the catalogue headline routinely discover the limit after the machine lands.

The Three Numbers That Matter

  • Swing over bed: the largest diameter that clears the ways.
  • Swing over carriage: the largest diameter you can actually turn past the slide.
  • Distance between centres: max shaft length with tailstock support.

Bar work adds a fourth: headstock bore. A 52 mm bore takes up to about 45 mm bar; a 80 mm bore opens 70 mm stock. Buying bore capacity you never use wastes money, but undersizing it locks the machine out of whole product families.

Write down your three largest current parts and your one dream part, with diameters and lengths, and size against those instead of the catalogue. We size lathes this way for every inquiry.
