Double-Direction Heavy-Duty Angle Head for Gantry Machining
A double-direction heavy-duty angle head gives heavy gantry machining centers two-direction angular output for aggressive side cutting on large castings and structural parts.
Heavy cutting from the side of a workpiece is the most demanding job an angle head can do. Side milling a large welded frame or facing the flank of a big casting puts full cutting loads on a head that is already working at 90 degrees to the spindle's natural direction. The double-direction heavy-duty angle head, offered by VITOP as optional equipment for heavy-duty gantry machining, is built for exactly this: a robust head with angular output in two directions, so the machine can attack work from either side without repositioning the head.
What Makes It Different
Standard right-angle heads put their output in one fixed direction relative to the head body, at light-to-medium cutting loads. This heavy-duty version differs in two ways. First, the output is double-direction, meaning the head can deliver cutting action in two angular directions, which lets one head serve side faces on both orientations of a part and reduces the number of head changes or setups. Second, it is built to heavy-duty specification: heavier gearing, a stiffer body and output arbor, and mounting suited to the large BT50 spindles used on VITOP's gantry machining center range.
The practical result is a head that can take real depth of cut from the side, on machines whose day job is roughing large castings and structural parts with 18.5 to 22 kW spindle motors.

When a Buyer Needs One
- Large structural and welded parts: frames, beds and machine bases where side faces and pads must be machined after welding, and the part is far too heavy to flip.
- Heavy castings: mould bases, press parts and machine elements with side-machined surfaces in steel or cast iron.
- Two-sided work in one setup: features on opposite sides or both orientations, where the double-direction output avoids a second head or a second setup.
- Roughing loads, not just finishing: when side cuts must remove serious metal, a light angle head will chatter or fail early.
For example, a manufacturer machining excavator components or large press frames in Southeast Asia typically has exactly this profile: heavy parts, side features, and no practical way to re-clamp a multi-tonne workpiece between operations.
Mounting and Operation
The head is specified together with the gantry machine so the spindle interface, Z-stroke allowance and control integration are matched at the factory. The machine's spindle nose drives the head's gearing; the output arbor takes the cutter and runs at the angle set for the operation. Because this is a manually configured heavy-duty head, the operating pattern is: mount the head, set the direction for the job, verify alignment, and run the batch.
Before ordering, give the supplier your cutting data, not just the part drawing. Depth of cut, width of cut, material and expected tool diameters determine whether the head's torque and rigidity match the job. Also confirm the clearance envelope: a heavy-duty head is physically large, and the gantry's Z-clearance and the part's geometry must leave room for the body.
Cutting Practice on the Floor
Even a heavy-duty angle head is a gearbox added to the drive train, so respect it. Climb mill where possible, take steady rather than shock loads, and keep the cutter overhang short. Verify the head's clamping and the spindle orientation lock before every heavy pass. Use directed high-pressure coolant if available; side cutting deep faces generates heat that flood coolant from above will not reach.
VITOP Machinery supplies angle heads in several grades, including BT50 gantry versions, heavy-duty, extended and custom builds. If your gantry work includes heavy side cutting, send the part drawings and cutting parameters to VITOP and ask for a head specification matched to your loads.
