Large Part Machining: Holding Tolerance on Big Castings
The challenges of machining large castings and weldments: thermal growth, workpiece weight, datum strategy and machine features that keep big parts true.
Accuracy gets harder as parts get bigger, and not linearly. A casting that weighs two tonnes bends under its own weight on an undersized table, warms unevenly through a long cut, and needs datums designed like a small building project.
What Big Parts Demand
- Support: full-length table contact or adjustable outriggers at defined points.
- Thermal strategy: rough, rest, finish; the part changes size while it cuts.
- Datum discipline: three-face location established early and reused for every operation.
- Machine stiffness: wide guideway spacing and a spindle head that resists moment loads.
Cutting forces are not the main enemy at this scale; gravity and heat are. A gantry structure helps because the cutter loads between two supports, and the casting sits still where it will be measured.
For buyers moving into large-part work, our engineers review part drawings for support and datum plans before a machine is chosen, because fixing these on paper costs nothing.
