Machine Tending ROI: Payback Maths for Robot Cells
Realistic payback maths for robot-tended CNC cells: what a cell costs, which savings count, and how to calculate a defensible ROI figure.
Robot tending is no longer exotic, but the sales decks still overstate the return. A defensible calculation starts with honest numbers: cell cost including guarding, fixtures and integration; operator cost per shift; current spindle utilisation; and the realistic gain from unattended running.
Where the Savings Come From
- Labour: one operator supervises three to five machines instead of one.
- Utilisation: spindle uptime typically rises from about 55 to 75 percent.
- Consistency: no fatigue-related crashes or missed deburring.
- Nights: lights-out running without night-shift premiums.
As a rule of thumb, a simple single-machine tending cell costs 20 to 35 percent of the machine price. If it lifts utilisation by 15 points on a machine billing at a healthy hourly rate, payback lands between 12 and 24 months for most two-shift shops. Complex multi-machine cells take longer but scale better.
We help buyers size tending cells alongside the machine, with fixtures designed for robotic gripping from day one.
