Machining Oversized Parts: Beyond the Table Edge
Strategies for parts larger than the machine table: overhang support, multi-setup datums, extended-travel machines and when a gantry is the honest answer.
Sooner or later the order arrives for a part bigger than the machine. Options exist, but each carries physics you cannot negotiate with: unsupported overhang deflects, multi-setup datums drift, and bolted-together setups multiply error.
The Honest Options
- Overhang machining with outrigger supports: workable for light finishing cuts on one face.
- Multi-setup with machined datums: accurate if datums are designed in from the first cut.
- Extended-travel or gantry machines: the real answer for repeated large work.
The arithmetic favours buying capability when large parts are a product line, not an event. Two setups on a big machine usually finish faster and truer than five setups on a small one, once fixturing and queuing are counted. Overhang tricks also load the machine far from its guideways, which ages a mid-size VMC quickly.
When overhang and multi-setup tricks stop scaling, a moving-column machine is the structured answer. Our ZX series moves the column over a fixed 2000 by 3100 mm table with X travel from 2200 to 4200 mm, built for large plates and structural parts that no conventional table can cover.
We size gantry machines for shops facing exactly this growth, and we will tell you when your volume does not justify it yet.
