Pearl River Delta Mould Industry: Machine Tool Demand

The Pearl River Delta mould industry shapes machine tool demand across Asia. Mould work is about 21.7% of Southeast Asia's vertical CNC end demand.

If you want to understand where machine tool demand in Asia is heading, follow the moulds. Moulds sit upstream of almost every plastic and die-cast part made in the region, and the industry that makes them concentrates around the Pearl River Delta. That concentration explains both what Guangdong factories build and what buyers across Southeast Asia are ordering this year.

The PRD Mould Cluster

For three decades the Pearl River Delta has been China's mould-making heartland, feeding the electronics, appliance, automotive and consumer goods supply chains clustered around it. Thousands of mould shops, from one-machine job shops to hundred-machine toolrooms, operate within a short drive of the factories that pour the castings, grind the guideways and build the machines. Machines designed here are shaped by mould shop feedback: rigidity for hardened steel, speed for electrode work, and accuracy that survives tropical humidity.

What Mould Shops Actually Buy

A mould toolroom is rarely a one-machine purchase. The typical set includes:

  • Vertical machining centres for mould bases, pockets and general machining.
  • High-speed engraving-milling machines for graphite and copper electrodes and fine finishing on hardened tooling.
  • EDM machines for ribs, corners and details milling cannot reach.
  • Surface grinders for plates and inserts ground flat and square.

Builders who serve this cluster end up offering the full toolroom set, which is why mould shops elsewhere often source their whole equipment line from Guangdong rather than mixing suppliers.

The Demand Numbers Behind the Trend

Southeast Asia's vertical CNC machine market is estimated at about USD 7.42 billion in 2026, up 31.8% against 2023, and growing at roughly 9.6% CAGR toward about USD 12.8 billion by 2030. Vertical machining centres account for about 67.1% of regional vertical CNC sales. End demand splits into automotive parts at about 34.2%, mould making at about 21.7% and electronics at about 18.9%. Two fast movers stand out: orders for EV battery trays grew about 41% and connector moulds about 33% between 2025 and 2026. Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia together take about 68.5% of the regional market.

What This Means for Buyers

Three practical conclusions follow. First, machines proven in PRD mould shops are proven against the hardest routine work: hardened steel, long cycles, tight finish requirements. Second, mould demand in your own market is growing fast enough that queue times for good toolrooms are shortening; capacity bought late costs rush premiums. Third, the same suppliers serving this cluster understand connector and battery-tray work, which is where much of the new mould demand concentrates.

A Cluster That Ships

Guangdong's mould machine output does not stay home. China's machine tool exports to Vietnam alone grew about 22.4% in 2025 to roughly USD 480 million, and builders here routinely configure machines for Southeast Asian voltages, climates and import rules. The mould industry built the machine industry, and the machine industry now ships across the border it learned from.

Reading the Trend as a Buyer

Growth numbers are useful only if they change what you order. Two adjustments follow from the data. First, with automotive parts taking the largest end-demand share and battery trays rising fast, buyers in EV supply chains should specify fixtures and travels for tray-sized work now rather than retrofitting later. Second, with electronics and connector moulds growing at a similar pace, spindle speed and surface finish capability deserve as much weight in your comparison as travels and table load. Demand is not just bigger; it is moving toward finer, faster work, and the machines you buy in 2026 should be configured for where that demand is going.
