Press Die Machining: Machine Specs Die Makers Need

What press tool and die shops should look for in machining centers: travel, stiffness for deep pockets, drilling depth and heavy cutting on tool steels.

Press dies punish machines differently than production parts. Die sets are large, heavy and full of deep pockets, thick ribs and countless drilled holes. The machining center that suits a die shop is rarely the one that suits a parts producer.

Specs That Matter for Die Work

  • Travels sized for complete die sets, each half machined in one setup.
  • Stiffness and damping for deep-pocket milling in P20 and H13 steels.
  • Peck drilling capacity and through-coolant for deep water lines.
  • A spacious, rigid table with grid holes for modular clamping.

Deep pockets are the classic trap. Long tools deflect, chatter ruins walls, and cycle times explode. Machines with generous clearance, strong rams and smooth low-speed spindle torque keep long tools stable. Spot-facing thousands of holes also rewards fast tool changes more than buyers expect.

We supply machines configured for die work, including through-spindle coolant and extended Z-travel options, and we are happy to review your die drawings before you commit.
