Sample Machining Tests: Send Drawings Before You Commit
Send your part drawings before buying a CNC machine, then ask for a live test cut. Prove the machine fits your parts before you commit.
Catalogue specifications tell you what a machine is. A test cut on your actual part drawing tells you what the machine will do in your shop. Before signing a purchase order, any serious buyer should send drawings to the shortlisted factory and ask for a sample machining test. It costs the factory a few hours, it costs you a message, and it removes more risk than any amount of brochure reading.
What a Sample Test Is
You send the factory one or two representative part drawings, ideally with the material specified. The factory machines the part on the exact model you are considering, in their workshop, and records the result: cycle time, tool list, measured dimensions and video of the cutting. For buyers of VITOP machines, this is a routine step, since the factory has casting, machining and assembly under one roof and can put a machine on power quickly.
How to Prepare the Drawing
Do not send your whole part library. Pick one or two parts that stress the machine in different ways:
- The part with your tightest tolerance, so the geometric accuracy gets tested.
- The part with difficult features: deep cavities, thin walls, hard material or side machining that would use an angle head.
Include the material grade, stock condition, and the tolerance band you actually accept in production. Be honest about surface finish requirements; a finish target you never check in your own shop just complicates the test. Mark which features are critical and which are reference dimensions.
Agree the Test Conditions in Writing
A meaningful test needs agreed conditions, otherwise the results are negotiable. Before the cutting starts, confirm: which machine and spindle (the model and taper, for example BT40), which cutting tools, which material will actually be used (your part material or a close substitute if unavailable), and which features will be measured afterwards. Ask who measures, on what equipment, and ask for the measurement sheet, not just a verbal "within tolerance".
Witness It Live
If you can, join the test by live video call. Watch the machine run the program, and ask the operator to show the control screen: position readouts, spindle load, alarms. Recorded video alone is weaker evidence. If the factory instead offers a similar demo part from stock, accept it as a first pass, but ask whether your actual drawing can be scheduled too. A factory confident in its machine will say yes.
What to Do With the Results
Compare across suppliers with identical test conditions, or the comparison means little. Two factories machining your part with different tools and different allowances will produce numbers that cannot be fairly ranked. Ask each supplier to machine the same drawing with the same tooling class, and then compare cycle time, tool life consumed and measured accuracy.
Keep the results in your purchase file. The measured dimensions and the cycle time become the baseline for your factory acceptance test later: when your machine is assembled, running the same test piece should reproduce the sample result within reason. If it does not, you have grounds to hold shipment until it does.
One Practical Warning
A sample test proves the machine can cut your part under the factory's best conditions, with a skilled operator and fresh tools. Your production results will depend on your own setup, coolant and tooling discipline. Use the test to disqualify machines that cannot do the work, and to compare candidates fairly, but plan your own process engineering for the day the machine lands in your shop.
Send the drawings before you argue about price. A supplier who accepts a sample test on your drawing has already told you something a low quote never will.
