Behind the Panels: Sheet Metal Quality in Machine Tools
Why machine enclosures, coolant tanks and guards deserve the same scrutiny as castings: how sheet metal work quality shows up over machine life.
Buyers kick tyres and check castings, then ignore the sheet metal. That is a mistake with a five-year fuse. Coolant tanks rust through, loose panels rattle into resonance, and thin guards that flex let mist escape into the workshop.
What Good Sheet Metal Looks Like
- Thickness that does not drum when tapped, especially doors and roof panels.
- Welded and sealed coolant tanks, pressure-tested before paint.
- Properly sized hinges and latches; sagging doors misalign switches.
- Coating systems rated for coolant, not decorative paint that peels in a year.
Enclosure quality also affects the shop around the machine. Tight seals keep mist off electronics and out of lungs. Sloppy cable entry holes invite coolant wicking into electrical cabinets, one of the most common causes of mysterious faults in year three.
Our sheet metal is laser-cut, welded and coated in-house, and every coolant tank is pressure-tested. Ask to see one on your visit.
