Spindle Health Checks: Runout, Warm-Up and Vibration

Simple spindle checks any buyer or maintenance team can run: test-indicator runout, warm-up behaviour, vibration trends and what each result implies.

Spindles rarely fail without warning; they whisper first. A ten-minute routine with a test indicator and a thermometer catches most of those whispers before they become rebuild invoices.

The Three Checks

  • Runout: a ground pin in the taper read on a test indicator should sit within a few microns at the nose.
  • Warm-up drift: run 30 minutes from cold and log growth; steady creep is normal, steps are not.
  • Vibration trend: feel or measure at the headstock; rising high-frequency noise precedes bearing trouble.

Runout above spec shows up as poor finish and short tool life long before anything audibly changes. Warm-up steps often mean a preload or lubrication problem. Vibration that climbs week over week is a bearing writing its resignation letter.

Our factory test logs warm-up curves for every spindle, and service teams repeat the same checks on annual visits so customers own the trend data too.
