Stress Relieving and Scraping: Hidden Steps Behind Accuracy
Two old-fashioned processes that modern CNC accuracy still depends on: stress relieving castings and hand-scraped bearing surfaces.
Not every accuracy decision happens on a CNC machine. Two old crafts still separate precise machines from ordinary ones: stress relieving and scraping. Buyers rarely see either, yet both decide how a machine behaves after a year of duty.
Stress Relieving
Castings and weldments hold internal stress from cooling and welding. Left alone, that stress releases over months, bending beds and twisting columns. Aging ovens or vibration treatment settle it before machining, so geometry stays put.
Hand Scraping
Scrapers shave microscopic high spots from sliding surfaces, creating an oil-holding texture no grinding wheel reproduces. Properly scraped ways wear in rather than wear out, holding oil films under heavy load.
- Ask whether castings are naturally aged, heat treated or vibration treated.
- Ask which surfaces are scraped versus purely ground.
- Blue-contact checks reveal scraping quality on any workshop visit.
Our assembly standard includes aging plus vibration treatment on major castings, and scraping on all box-way sliding pairs.
