Truss Loading vs Robot Tending: Which Fits Your Shop

Two ways to automate CNC loading compared: overhead truss systems versus articulated robots, and the part shapes that decide the winner.

Automation conversations default to six-axis robots, but the overhead truss deserves a hearing, especially for prismatic parts. A truss is a gantry frame carrying a gripper over the machine, moving in straight lines with boring reliability. Robots bring reach and flexibility at the cost of integration complexity.

Choosing Between Them

  • Flat, regular parts, high volume: truss wins on speed, simplicity and uptime.
  • Mixed parts, machine cells of varying heights: robot wins on flexibility.
  • Tight floor space around machines: trusses live overhead and free the floor.
  • Future layout changes: robots relocate more easily than gantry frames.

Costs converge more than buyers expect once guarding and integration are counted. The truss often lands cheaper for a two-machine line with repeatable blanks; the robot lands cheaper for one machine serving chaotic part families.

We build and integrate both styles, and the first question we ask is about your blank, not your budget.
