Turret Indexing Accuracy: The Heart of Multi-Tasking
How CNC lathe turrets index, what indexing accuracy means for part quality, and the tests that reveal turret health before problems appear.
Every tool change on a turning center is a miniature positioning event. The turret lifts, rotates on its curvic coupling, locks, and repeats thousands of times a week. Indexing accuracy decides whether drilled holes land where programmed and whether boring bars repeat their depth.
How Turrets Hold Position
- Curvic couplings: hardened, ground tooth rings that seat repeatably under load.
- Hydraulic or motor-pawled locking that clamps before cutting starts.
- Encoders that verify the counted position on every index.
Health checks are simple. Dial a finish boring bar to a known depth, index away and back ten times, and watch the indicator. Repeat with a loaded toolholder to test under mass. Rising scatter means coupling wear, debris or weak clamping pressure.
Cleanliness matters too: chips packed in the turret seat mimic wear. Our maintenance guide includes the test procedure, and service teams teach it during commissioning.
