Automatic Chip Conveyor: Why Swarf Removal Pays for Itself

An automatic chip conveyor with PLC control removes swarf from machining centers and lathes automatically. Types, matching to your material plus maintenance basics.

Chips look like a by-product, but on a CNC machine they are a daily operating cost. Chips left in the working zone get recut, which shortens tool life and marks the surface. Chips packed around the table block coolant flow, so the tool cuts hot and the workpiece drifts. And chips that reach the tank settle into the coolant pump. An automatic chip conveyor removes swarf continuously, and it is one of the cheapest reliability upgrades you can order on a machine.

Two Conveyor Types, Two Jobs

VITOP offers automatic chip conveyors in chain plate and spiral versions, both controlled by a PLC so discharge runs on a cycle or on demand without an operator standing by.

  • Chain plate (hinge belt) conveyor: steel plates on a driven chain drag chips up and out. This is the workhorse for machining centers cutting steel and stainless, where chips are long, stringy and heavy. It also carries coolant out with the chips, keeping the sump cleaner.
  • Spiral conveyor: a rotating screw pushes chips along a trough. It suits shorter, granular chips and compact machine layouts where there is little room for a belt.

Match the Conveyor to Your Material

Aluminium produces fluffy, light chips that flow easily but clog screens. Cast iron produces small abrasive particles that settle fast and punish pumps. Alloy steel produces strings that tangle anything they can reach. Tell the machine builder what you cut most. The discharge height, trough width and plate pitch are chosen around your chips, not the other way around.

Maintenance That Keeps It Running

A chip conveyor is simple, but it still needs a routine. Clean the discharge chute so chips cannot fall back in. Check chain tension and scraper condition on plate conveyors. Watch the drive motor current; a slow rise over weeks usually means packed chips under the belt, and clearing it early takes minutes. With PLC control you can also set short periodic runs so chips never accumulate to the point where the first stroke of the day jams.

Ordering With Your VITOP Machine

VITOP fits automatic chip conveyors to its machining centers and lathes as factory options, specified with the machine so the sump, coolant tank and discharge height all line up. For shops planning toward unattended running, continuous chip removal is not optional; it is the foundation. If you are unsure which type suits your mix of materials, send us the details and we will size it with the machine.

Coolant and Chips Work as a System

The conveyor is one part of a chip management loop. Coolant drains back through the conveyor, which is why its trough and seals matter; a leaking plate belt wastes coolant every cycle. Position the discharge so chips drop into a bin or trolley without blocking, and consider a chip wringer or centrifuge if your coolant costs are significant, since dry chips sell for more and wet chips carry coolant away with them.

For lathes, think about the path from the cutting zone. Slant-bed machines feed chips down to the conveyor naturally, while flat-bed layouts may need a flap or auger to move swarf out of the way. If you run both steel and aluminium on one machine, run the conveyor during cutting, not just after, so fine material leaves the sump continuously instead of compacting at the bottom.
