Gantry Right-Angle Head BT50: Side Machining on Large Moulds

The gantry right-angle head with BT50 interface brings 90-degree side milling to gantry machining centers. Where it saves hours on large moulds and structural parts.

On a gantry machining center the workpiece is usually the expensive part of the setup: a multi-tonne mould base or a welded frame that took hours to crane into position. When a feature on its side wall needs cutting, lifting and re-fixturing the part is the slowest and riskiest move in the whole job. A gantry right-angle head solves it on the table. With a BT50 interface, it plugs into the machine's BT50 tooling system and turns the cutting direction through 90 degrees for side milling.

What It Is

The VITOP gantry right-angle head is a right-angle milling head built for BT50 gantry machining centers. Power enters through the machine spindle in the standard BT50 interface and exits at 90 degrees, so the machine can mill horizontal faces, cavity walls and side features that a vertical spindle cannot reach. It is ordered as optional equipment and matched to the gantry series you run.

Where It Earns Its Keep

  • Mould work: machining slide pockets, guide plate faces and clamping slots on the sides of large mould bases without turning the block.
  • Structural parts: side faces and ribs on welded frames where re-clamping a flexible, heavy part risks losing flatness.
  • Machine building: milling mounting faces and keyways on vertical surfaces of beds and columns.

The common thread is weight. Every time you reposition a part that weighs several tonnes, you spend crane time and introduce a new alignment error. Side milling with a right-angle head keeps the setup untouched.

Selection and Setup Points

Check three things before ordering. First, reach: the head must hang far enough below the spindle nose for the side wall to be inside its working range. Second, cutting load: heavy side cuts need a head designed for them, and this is where the heavy-duty and extended versions come in. Third, programming: the output spindle sits offset from the machine spindle centre, so tool length and offsets need setting once and then recording in the job sheet.

Run the first cut conservatively and build up. Side milling on gantry machines usually involves large cutters, and a proper entry move protects both the head and the workpiece.

Ordering With Your Gantry

VITOP builds gantry machining centers for mould and structural part machining, and the BT50 right-angle head is specified as an option with the machine so clearances, table load and control integration all line up. Send us your typical workpieces and we will confirm the right head configuration before the machine is built.

Integration With the Control and the Job

Because the head occupies the BT50 spindle like any tool, plan its place in the tooling scheme. On many gantry jobs the head is fitted manually for the side-machining block rather than stored in the magazine, so schedule the job so all vertical operations run before it goes on. Record the head’s offsets in the job documentation so the next shift does not have to rediscover them.

Weight and balance deserve attention as well. A right-angle head changes the effective mass hanging from the spindle, and on long Z travels the movement behaviour may differ slightly. Run a short warm-up cycle after fitting, then check the first feature against the drawing. None of this takes long, and it is exactly the routine that keeps heavy side cuts predictable across a large mould job.
