Chip Management: the Unglamorous Key to Automation
Chip handling is where unattended CNC production usually fails first. How to size plus specify a chip conveyor before you order the machine.
Ask a shop owner what stands between them and lights-out machining, and most will talk about robots, tool life or the control system. Chips rarely come up. Spend a few years around automated cells and you learn the truth: chip handling is where unattended production fails first. A spindle can run for hours without an operator, but if the chips are not cleared, the machine will not survive the first night shift on its own.
What chips do to an unattended machine
Three problems come up again and again:
- Chip recutting. Chips left in the pocket get cut a second time. Surface finish degrades, inserts wear out faster, and dimensions drift. On a manned machine the operator blows the pocket clean between parts. Nobody does that at 2 a.m.
- Coolant starvation. Swarf packed around the workpiece and fixture blocks coolant from reaching the cutting edge. Heat builds up, tool life collapses, and the scrap bin fills up instead of the chip bin.
- A full collection bin. The conveyor stops, chips back up into the working area, and an unattended run ends until someone empties it.
Conveyor types and where each one fits
Not all swarf behaves the same, so the conveyor has to match your material:
- Hinge belt conveyors. The default choice for steel and cast iron. They lift chunky, stringy chips and grinding sludge without clogging, and they move a lot of coolant with the chips.
- Scraper conveyors. Good for short, stiff swarf and heavy, dense chips that a hinge belt tends to carry around rather than lift out.
- Screw conveyors. Compact, so they suit smaller machines and tight layouts, but they struggle with long, stringy aluminium swarf that wraps around the screw.
Aluminium deserves a special mention. Stringy swarf nests, tangles and jams anything with rotating parts. If your mix is mostly aluminium, plan for chip-breaking tooling, correct coolant concentration and possibly a shredder ahead of the conveyor.
Questions to settle before you order
- How many chips per hour? Estimate your removal rate in steel or aluminium and size the bin so it needs emptying once per shift, not three times. A bin sized for one part family may be hopeless for another.
- Where does the coolant go? A conveyor that carries coolant out of the machine drains your tank. Check the return path and filtration, especially in hot climates where coolant degrades faster.
- Where does the chip exit? A high discharge lets chips fall straight into a bin cart or skip. Confirm the discharge height against your floor layout.
- Pit or plinth? Some conveyor layouts want a pit below the machine. Decide before the foundation is poured, not after.
Factory-fitted beats retrofitted
The market has noticed. Roughly 35% of buyers now ask for automation-ready features on new machines, up from about 10% two years ago. Cost is part of the reason: retrofitting automation later commonly costs 20% or more than the same features fitted at the factory, where the premium is typically 5-8% of the machine price.
VITOP Machinery supplies an automatic chip conveyor as factory-fitted optional equipment, specified together with the machine rather than bolted on afterwards. For a machining centre headed into unattended or lightly attended production, that is one of the first options worth ticking.
Chips are not glamorous. They are also the single most common reason a well-planned automation project disappoints in its first month. Settle the chip question before the machine order and everything downstream gets easier.
