Thai Automotive Suppliers Are Buying Bigger Lathes: the Pattern

Exporters report Thai buyers moving to CK6180 plus CK61100-class lathes. The EV parts pivot behind the pattern plus what it means for buyers.

Exporters of Chinese CNC lathes are seeing a clear shift in Thai order patterns: buyers are increasingly ordering larger machines, with CK6180 and even CK61100-class units appearing where CK6140s used to be the norm. The pattern is not random. It tracks directly with what Thailand's automotive supply chain is machining this decade.

The automotive pivot behind bigger lathes

Thailand's auto industry is repositioning from internal combustion components toward EV parts: battery casings, motor housings and heat sinks. These workpieces are simply bigger. A motor housing for a light commercial vehicle may swing well past what a 400 mm lathe handles comfortably, and battery structural parts push larger still. When the workpiece grows, swing over bed, spindle bore and rigidity grow with it, which is precisely the CK6180 and CK61100 territory.

The round parts in EV drivetrains, motor shafts, hubs and housing preforms, still arrive at turning machines first. That keeps lathes, not just machining centers, in the centre of the investment wave.

The policy backdrop

Thailand's Board of Investment has discontinued incentives for general metal cutting projects and redirected support toward smart manufacturing and high-precision CNC. For suppliers, the practical reading is that ordinary turning capacity no longer earns the support it once did, while precision machining tied to the EV supply chain does. Bigger, more capable machines fit that direction; they are also harder for competitors to replicate quickly.

Practical notes for Thai buyers

  • Power is the easy part. Thailand runs 380 V / 50 Hz, the same as China, so no transformer gymnastics are needed for most machines.
  • Shipping is short. Sea freight from South China to Laem Chabang takes roughly 7-14 days, and order-to-running for a typical project commonly lands at 60-90 days.
  • Mind the Form E deadline. The original Form E certificate must reach Thai Customs within 30 days of clearance, or the MFN duty of 5-10% applies. Confirm in the contract that the supplier issues it through CCPIT before shipment.
  • Audit if you cannot visit. Third-party factory audits by SGS or BV typically cost USD 500-1,500 and are cheap insurance on a machine of this size.

Questions to ask before you order a bigger lathe

Size up the machine against the drawings, not the brochure. First, swing over bed versus swing over carriage: the housing that matters may sit above the carriage, where the swing number is smaller. Second, spindle bore diameter, if long shafts or tubes must pass through the chuck. Third, tailstock and steady rest specification, because long EV components often need support between centres. Fourth, the control and training package, since a bigger machine usually means new programs and new fixturing for the whole team. Finally, ask for the laser and ballbar test report of the actual machine. At VITOP every lathe is laser-verified before shipment, and the report travels with it.

What this means for your own purchase

If your workpiece drawings for EV-related parts show swing diameters approaching half a metre, or spindle bores that need to pass long shafts, price the CK6180 class before defaulting to your usual size. At VITOP we build flat bed and slant bed CNC lathes across these classes, every machine laser-verified before shipment. The extra investment in a larger machine is easier to justify when the order book already names the parts. Match the machine to the workpiece, not to yesterday's part list.
