CM Series CNC Engraving and Milling Machine Guide
CM series engraving-milling machines span CM650-CM1280 with spindles to 24000 rpm for electrodes, precision mould work plus fine detail machining.
Where a VMC Stops and an Engraving-Milling Machine Starts
Small tools, fine details and hard materials punish a general-purpose VMC. Run a 2 mm cutter at 8000 rpm and you get poor finish and short tool life; the same cutter at 20000 rpm cuts cleanly and lasts. The VITOP CM series CNC engraving and milling machine fills that gap. Four models, CM650 through CM1280, built for electrode machining, precision mould work and fine finishing.
Travels and Table Sizes
Sliding saddle stroke (X-axis) runs from 600 to 1200 mm, worktable travel (Y-axis) from 500 to 800 mm, and spindle box travel (Z-axis) from 250 to 400 mm. Tables range from 600 x 500 mm to 1200 x 800 mm, carrying 300 to 800 kg.
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Sliding saddle stroke (X-axis) | 600 - 1200 mm |
| Worktable travel (Y-axis) | 500 - 800 mm |
| Spindle box travel (Z-axis) | 250 - 400 mm |
| Worktable dimensions | 600x500 up to 1200x800 mm |
| Worktable load capacity | 300 - 800 kg |
| Spindle installation diameter | 125 - 150 mm |
| Speed range | 500 - 18000 / 500 - 24000 r/min by model |
| Spindle motor power | 7.5 / 8 / 11 kW |
| Positioning accuracy (X/Y/Z) | ±0.003/300 mm |
| Machine weight | 3200 - 6200 kg |
That Z stroke is deliberately shorter than a VMC's. Small tools cannot reach deep anyway, and a shorter, stiffer Z column is one reason these machines hold detail at high speed.
High-Speed Spindles, Sized by Model
The spindle options define the series. Depending on model you get a 500-18000 or 500-24000 r/min range with 7.5, 8 or 11 kW of motor power, on a 125 to 150 mm installation diameter. At 24000 rpm a 6 mm cutter runs at sensible surface speeds in aluminium; at 18000 rpm carbide burns cleanly through graphite and copper electrode work. Power in the 8-11 kW band also separates these machines from light engraving routers: you can take real cuts, not just scratch the surface.
Accuracy for Detail Work
Positioning accuracy is ±0.003/300 mm on all three axes. For electrode work that matters more than it sounds: an electrode that cuts oversize by 20 microns passes the error straight into the EDM cavity. VITOP supports the number with HT300 resin-sand castings, double ageing treatment, hand-scraped and matched guideways, and laser interferometry plus ballbar testing on every machine before shipment.
What Shops Actually Run on These Machines
- Copper and graphite electrodes for EDM sinking, with fine detail and clean edges.
- High-gloss and fine-textured mould details in hardened steel.
- Small precision parts, thin walls and rib features that chatter on larger machines.
- Nameplate engraving, codes and decorative detail machining.
Practical Tips Before You Order
Two details decide satisfaction with a machine like this. First, tool holders: match the holder and collet to your smallest cutters, since runout at the tip multiplies across a fine detail pass. Second, plan the workholding; parts this size often sit in a vice, but fixtures for repeat batches are worth the effort. Confirm both points with VITOP when you request the quotation.
CM Series or a Standard VMC?
The split is practical. If most of your cutting is heavy roughing with 50 mm face mills, buy a VMC and its torque. If a significant share of your hours go into electrodes, small mould details and finishing with cutters under 12 mm, the CM series will do that work faster and better. Many mould shops run both and let each machine do what it is good at. If you want a second opinion on the split, send VITOP a month of your typical jobs and ask which machine each one belongs on.
