Control Openness: Data Interfaces Buyers Should Specify
Nearly half of manufacturers now rank data-interface openness among their top selection criteria. What to specify on the control before you sign the order.
Surveys of manufacturers now put data-interface openness among the top three machine selection criteria for about 46% of respondents, and the reason is simple: a machine that will not talk to your systems becomes an island. The machining may be excellent, but if your MES, monitoring software or scheduler cannot read data from the control, you lose the visibility that modern production planning assumes.
What Openness Buys You
- Machine monitoring: spindle load, feed rate override and alarm states streamed to a dashboard, so you see utilisation honestly instead of guessing.
- OEE calculation: part counts and downtime reasons captured automatically, not tallied on a whiteboard.
- Maintenance alarms forwarded to your phone or maintenance system before a small fault becomes a stoppage.
- Program and parameter management from a central server instead of USB sticks walking around the shop.
What to Specify on the Order
Whatever control you choose, put these items in writing:
- Ethernet port as standard, with the protocol documentation available, not locked by the distributor.
- Access to the control's data API: FOCAS on Fanuc, OPC UA or similar on Siemens and Mitsubishi. Confirm which one applies and whether a licence is included.
- Macro B or equivalent programmable extensions, plus enough program memory for your part families.
- Custom screen or user task support if you plan to embed your own operator prompts.
- A written statement that alarm codes and ladder logic documentation ship with the machine.
Choosing Between Controls in Southeast Asia
Fanuc remains the most common control in the region, fitted to roughly half of new machines, so Fanuc-trained programmers and service engineers are the easiest to find. Siemens is strong in Malaysia and Indonesia, and Mitsubishi controls keep growing across the region. Do not pick a control on data features alone; pick the one your team can program and your local service network can support, then confirm its openness level in the contract.
A Practical Migration Path
If your shop has no monitoring yet, do not buy software first. Start by confirming machine-side readiness, then run a low-cost monitoring trial on one machine for a month. Collect spindle-on time, alarm counts and cycle times, and see which decisions actually improve. Most shops find that two or three data points, read every morning, beat a dashboard nobody opens. Specifying the interfaces today is what makes that trial plug-and-play instead of another integration project.
Confirm network and IT policy as well. Some IT departments block machine networks by default; agree the VLAN, static addresses and firewall rules during installation rather than after. Machines that cannot reach the server are the most common cause of "the interface does not work" complaints that are really infrastructure issues.
Avoiding Lock-In Across a Fleet
If you run machines from several builders, standardising on one control family simplifies training, post-processors and monitoring integration. When you buy custom machines, tell the builder your fleet standard and ask them to configure it. VITOP offers Fanuc, Siemens and Mitsubishi packages across our vertical and gantry lines, and we will quote the data interface options explicitly so you know exactly what your monitoring software will and will not see.
Test Before Shipment
During factory acceptance, connect your monitoring software or a trial tool to the machine and verify live data reading, alarm forwarding and program upload. It takes an hour at the factory and prevents the classic scenario of a machine running well for months while your dashboard shows nothing.
