Custom Angle Heads Built to Order: BT50, Heavy-Duty, Extended

Angle heads let one machine reach sides, cavities plus deep walls without refixturing. Here is how custom builds work.

If your parts have side faces, deep cavities or features you cannot reach with a vertical spindle, an angle head turns a three-axis machine into a multi-face machining center. Instead of moving the workpiece to a second setup, the spindle output turns 90 degrees and machines the side while the part stays clamped. VITOP Machinery offers a full family of angle heads for its gantry, vertical and engraving-milling machines, including fully custom builds made to order. Here is how the range breaks down and how to specify one.

Why Buyers Order Angle Heads

For example, a mould shop machining a deep pocket with oil channels on the side wall: with a standard vertical spindle, that means a second setup on a horizontal machine or a manual reposition, each adding setup error. With a right-angle head, the side features are cut in the same clamping. Setup count drops, and datum-related scrap drops with it.

The Standard Range

Gantry Right-Angle Head BT50

The workhorse for BT50 gantry machining centers. It carries the BT50 spindle interface, so tool changes and rigidity match the machine's heavy cutting duty. A gantry universal angle head version adds flexible angle machining beyond a fixed 90-degree output, useful for chamfers and inclined faces.

Automatic Indexing Options

  • Fully automatic right-angle head: indexes automatically, including tool change orientation. Fits gantry and vertical machining centers. The control positions the head, so the operator does not touch it between operations.
  • Semi-automatic right-angle head: manual setting for the indexing position. Lower cost, practical when the part family is fixed and the head stays in one orientation per job.

Heavy-Duty Versions

For heavy roughing on large workpieces, the heavy-duty angle head provides angular output with high rigidity. The double-direction heavy-duty angle head adds two-direction angular output, so bi-directional heavy cutting is possible without flipping the head. Where deep cavities block a normal head, the heavy-duty extended angle head uses a BT50-BT40 interface to reach further down while keeping heavy cutting capability.

Built-in Motor Type

The built-in type angle head carries its own motor, designed for compact side machining on engraving and milling machines. Because it does not draw power through the machine spindle, it suits smaller toolroom machines machining electrodes and precision mould details.

Fully Custom Builds

When no standard head fits, VITOP builds custom non-standard right-angle heads made to order, tailored to the customer's spindle interface or to special reach and clearance needs. This is where the factory's own machining and assembly capability matters, since custom gear sets and housings must be produced and tested in-house.

What to Send the Factory

A custom angle head quote is only as accurate as the information behind it. Prepare:

  • Your machine model and spindle interface, for example BT50 on a gantry machining center.
  • The workpiece drawing with the features the head must reach, including cavity depth and wall positions.
  • Cutter sizes and expected cutting forces, so the gear set and bearings are sized for the load.
  • Required output orientation and whether indexing must be automatic or manual.
  • Maximum allowable head envelope, so it clears fixtures, columns and covers.

With those five items, the factory can propose a standard unit, or a custom build with a defined output speed, torque and reach. Without them, you risk receiving a head that fits the spindle but not the part.

A Practical Note on Verification

Ask for a test record for the head: run it on the actual machine class, check output runout and temperature rise, and confirm the tool change orientation if it is the automatic type. A quality builder will show this without being asked twice.

Angle heads are one of the highest-return options you can specify at order time. Adding one later usually costs more, and retrofitting onto an existing machine raises interface questions. If side machining is on your part drawings, say so in the first message to the factory.
