Custom CNC Lathe Options: Chuck, Tailstock, Tooling Choices

Chuck size, tailstock, tooling plus bar capacity shape a CNC lathe order. What VITOP's flat-bed plus slant-bed series offer.

CNC lathes look simpler than machining centers, yet the ordering decisions are just as consequential. Chuck type, tailstock, tooling and bed style decide what the machine will do for the next decade. Here is how those choices work across VITOP's two lathe families.

Flat Bed or Slant Bed First

Flat-bed lathes (CK series) suit shafts, discs and sleeves, larger swing diameters, and shops that value an open, easy-to-service layout. Slant-bed lathes (HC series) suit high-mix batch production: chips fall away from the work zone, hydraulic chucks and servo turrets speed up tool changes, and the inclined bed handles unattended running better. Most shops end up with both over time, so decide per job family rather than per fashion.

The CK Flat-Bed Range

The CK series spans six models from CK6140S/750 to CK6180/1000:

  • Max swing over bed: 420 to 800 mm; over carriage: 230 to 520 mm.
  • Max machining length: 750 to 1500 mm.
  • Spindle through-hole: 66 to 105 mm, which sets your max bar diameter.
  • Spindle motor: 5.5 to 15 kW.
  • Manual 3-jaw chuck: 200 to 400 mm; tool shank 25x25 or 32x32 mm.
  • Repeatability from 0.006 to 0.012 mm depending on model.

For a shaft shop, machining length and swing matter most. For bar work, the through-hole diameter is the number to check first.

The HC Slant-Bed Range

The HC series offers seven models from HC-400T to HC-360T. Key figures: hydraulic chuck 160 to 250 mm, max bar diameter 36 to 75 mm, spindle speeds 2250 to 5000 r/min, servo main motors from 5.5 to 11 kW, and machining accuracy to IT6. Recommended turning diameters run from 155 to 320 mm with lengths up to 500 mm on larger models. X travels run 200 to 500 mm and Z travels 260 to 850 mm.

The hydraulic chuck and servo turret are what make the HC series productive in batches: clamping is repeatable, indexing is fast, and the operator's job becomes loading and measuring.

Matching the Machine to Your Workpiece

Two numbers to pin down before choosing a model: your longest part between centres and your heaviest bar. A CK6180/1000 swings 800 mm over the bed and turns 1500 mm lengths, but check swing over the carriage too, because large flanges near the chuck often hit it. On the HC series, match the recommended turning diameter and length pair to your part family rather than reading swing alone; a 320 mm turning diameter with 500 mm length covers far more work than the numbers suggest.

What You Can Customise

  • Chuck: manual or hydraulic, and jaw size matched to your smallest and largest workpiece.
  • Tailstock: specify it if you turn shafts; leave it off if your parts are short discs.
  • Turret tooling: shank sizes, live tools where the series supports them, and holders matched to your tooling stock.
  • Bar capacity: choose the model by through-hole or bar diameter, then set collet or chuck arrangement around it.

What Exporters See in Southeast Asia

Exporters report that Vietnamese shops commonly start with CK6140 or CK6150-class flat-bed machines, Thai buyers increasingly order larger CK6180/CK61100 units, and Indonesian job shops are upgrading from manual to CNC in steady numbers. Southeast Asia is the largest export region for lathes at roughly 40 to 45% of volume. The pattern behind those orders is consistent: start with the workpiece family, buy one size up from today's largest part, and standardise tooling across the fleet.

Before You Order

Send us your largest shaft drawing, your bar stock list and your batch sizes. We will come back with a model, chuck and tooling configuration, and the reasoning behind each choice, so the lathe fits your work from the first batch.
