Customizing a Vertical Machining Center: Spindle, ATC, 4th Axis

Spindle type, tool magazine, coolant plus 4th-axis options turn a standard VMC into a machine matched to your parts. Here is what can be specified.

A vertical machining center is the most customised machine in most mould and parts shops, because it does the widest mix of work. The good news is that a VMC leaves the factory with far more configuration choices than a catalogue page suggests. Here is what you can specify, series by series and option by option.

Pick the Series Before the Options

VITOP's VMC range splits into six families, and choosing the right one saves more money than any option negotiation:

  • E series (VMC-855E to VMC-1580E): economical configuration with linear roller guides for high rigidity. The workhorse for general machining.
  • G series (VMC-850G to VMC-1268G): precision mould and parts machining, BBT40 spindles, positioning accuracy ±0.003/300 mm.
  • L series (VMC-850L to VMC-S20L): extended travels up to 2000 mm X and 900 mm Y, BT40 to BT50 spindles, load up to 2000 kg.
  • T series: rigidity and stability, with rapid traverse up to 36 m/min on models like the VMC-855T.
  • VH series: high-precision finishing with intelligent control features.
  • YBM gantry-type: long workpieces, HSK-A63 spindles at 15000 rpm standard, 20000 rpm optional.

Spindle Options: Match Speed to Material

Across the series you can choose belt-driven spindles at 8000 or 10000 rpm, or direct-drive spindles at 12000 or 15000 rpm. Spindle power ranges from 7.5 kW on T models to 11 kW on E, G and VH machines, with rated torque from about 35.8 N.m on high-speed spindles up to 143 N.m on BT50 units in the L series.

A simple guide: 12000 to 24000 rpm suits aluminium and composites; 8000 to 12000 rpm with higher torque suits steel and mould work. BBT40 tool holding, standard on G and VH machines, improves rigidity at the gauge line for finish cuts.

Tool Magazine and Automation Options

The standard 24-tool magazine with 3.5-second tool-to-tool change covers most jobs. If you run long unmanned shifts, the double magazine machines (VMC-1268F, VMC-1380F) carry 32 tools on each side, 64 in total, which cuts tool-change waits and keeps lights-out runs loaded. Maximum tool weight is typically 15 kg per pocket.

Coolant and Chip Handling

Cooling box capacity runs from 200 L on compact models to 240 or 480 L in the L series. Larger tanks hold temperature steadier, which matters for dimensional consistency on long shifts, and they suit shops running through-the-spindle coolant at pressure. An automatic chip conveyor is a worthwhile option on any machine cutting steel continuously; ask for it factory-fitted rather than retrofitted later. One point buyers overlook: specify coolant through the spindle only if your tooling and seals support it, and tell us the pressure class you plan to run. The cooling box, pump and filtration are configured around that choice at build time.

4th Axis and Special Attachments

A CNC dividing head on the table turns a 3-axis VMC into a capable 4-axis machine for camshafts, spiral ports and multi-side parts. Right-angle heads reach into cavities and side walls that the spindle cannot approach. Both are specified at order time so the control and ATC are configured around them. Where a job family is truly 5-axis work, we will say so and point you to that series instead; forcing a 4th axis onto a 3-axis machine rarely ends well.

A Short Specification Routine

  1. Measure your largest workpiece and add 20 to 30% clearance in X, Y and Z.
  2. Choose spindle by material: torque for steel, speed for aluminium.
  3. Count tools per job, then size the magazine above that number.
  4. Add coolant volume and chip handling for your longest planned shifts.
  5. Decide on the 4th axis now, not after delivery.

Send us a drawing of your typical part and we will return a configuration with the reasoning behind each choice.
