Custom Gantry Machining Centers: Table Size, Travels, Spindle

How to specify a custom gantry machining center: workpiece envelope, table load, Z stroke plus spindle options across VITOP's gantry series.

Gantry machining centers are the machines buyers most often need customised, because the parts they cut are usually unique to the buyer: large moulds, structural components, machine bases. Specifying one well comes down to four decisions. Here is how we walk buyers through them at VITOP.

Start with the Workpiece, Not the Machine

Pull out your largest part and add 20 to 30% clearance in every direction for fixturing, tool overhang and operator access. A 2000 mm structural part wants a machine that can swallow about 2600 mm, not exactly 2000. Also weigh the heaviest workpiece with its fixture. Table load capacity is a hard limit, and exceeding it quietly ruins accuracy long before anything breaks.

The VITOP Gantry Series at a Glance

SeriesX travelTypical use
S series (13 models)1200 to 8200 mmLarge moulds and structural parts; tables from 900x1400 up to 2200x8000 mm, load from 1600 to 30000 kg
E series (19 models)1600 to 3500 mmEconomical configuration for medium and large workpieces, load 2000 to 8000 kg
High-speed G series1200 to 1600 mmFast machining of large panels and moulds, 12000 rpm standard spindle
Moving-column ZX series2200 to 4200 mmLarge plates such as engineering machinery parts, 2000 mm Y travel

On most S and E models, positioning accuracy is ±0.005/300 mm with ±0.003/300 mm repeatability. Ask for the laser interferometry report of the actual machine, not just the catalogue figure.

Spindle: Torque First, Then Speed

Gantry work is dominated by heavy cutting in steel and cast iron, so most buyers choose a BT50 spindle. Across the series the standard choice is a BT50-155 or BT50-190 belt-driven spindle at 6000 rpm, with motor power of 18.5 to 22 kW. For deeper heavy milling, a gear head BT50-190 at 6000 rpm with a 4.4:1 ratio multiplies torque at the tool.

If your work includes aluminium or finishing passes, an optional direct BT40-12000 rpm spindle is available on several models. A practical rule: BT50 for heavy cutting, BT40 high speed for finishing. Some buyers spec both by choosing a series model that accepts each option. Whichever you pick, ask for the torque curve of the actual spindle package rather than the motor rating, because belt ratios and gear heads change what reaches the cutter.

Z Stroke and Gantry Width

Z travel ranges from about 500 mm on high-speed models to 1250 mm on S-series C variants, with distance from spindle face to table reaching 1500 mm on the largest builds. Measure your tallest workpiece plus fixture, then add tool length. Gantry width from 1100 to 2800 mm decides the widest part that passes between the columns, which catches more buyers out than table length does.

Fixturing and T-Slot Layout

Table details matter as much as travels for a gantry build. T-slot patterns across the series range from 7 slots at 150 mm spacing on high-speed models to 9 slots at 200 mm spacing on heavy S-series tables, with 15 slots at 200 mm on the moving-column ZX-2030. Tell us your clamp layout early, because slot count and spacing affect the table casting. For parts held on fixture blocks, we also confirm the table load rating against fixture weight, not just part weight.

What to Confirm in Writing

  • Table size, load capacity and T-slot layout for your fixturing.
  • X, Y and Z travels against your part plus 20 to 30% clearance.
  • Spindle type, taper, speed and power, matched to your materials.
  • Positioning and repeatability figures, with the test method named.
  • Optional equipment: right-angle heads, chip conveyor, control choice.

A gantry machine is a long-term purchase, and the specification stage decides whether it fits your work in five years, not just next year. Send us your largest part drawing and we will match a model to it.
