How a Custom CNC Machine Order Works: Drawing Review to Shipment
A walk through each stage of a custom CNC machine order: drawing review, assembly, accuracy testing, packing, shipment.
Buyers often hesitate at the word "custom" because nobody has explained the process. In practice a custom CNC machine order follows a clear path, and a buyer who knows it can push the project forward at every stage. Here is how it runs at a factory that builds machines end to end.
Step 1: Send Drawings, Not Just a Model Number
A useful request contains part drawings or part families, material, expected batch sizes, and any accuracy targets. "I need a VMC850" tells the factory little; a drawing of your largest workpiece plus a note on cycle time tells it everything. At this stage, send the real numbers. If your part needs a 700 mm Z clearance, say so early rather than after the machine is built.
Step 2: Specification Review and Quotation
The factory's engineers review the drawings and propose a configuration: series and model, table size, travels, spindle type and speed, control, tool magazine, coolant and chip handling, optional attachments such as a 4th axis or angle head. You should receive a written specification sheet, not just a price.
Check the sheet line by line. Travels, spindle taper, ATC capacity and voltage are the four items most often misunderstood. Export orders should fix the electrical configuration here, because changing it later costs weeks.
Step 3: Contract, Casting and Base Machining
After the contract, the build starts at the casting. HT300 resin-sand castings receive double ageing treatment, then base parts are machined in-house. On a custom order this is where specification changes surface in metal, so confirm final dimensions early. Lead times for custom machines commonly run 60 to 120 days, and the casting stage is a big chunk of it.
Step 4: Assembly and Scraping
Fitters assemble the machine, hand-scrape and match the guideways, and mount spindles, ball screws and the tool magazine. On a custom build, this is also when optional equipment is fitted: chip conveyor, angle head, extra tool pockets, or a larger coolant tank. Ask for photos at agreed milestones. A builder with nothing to hide sends them without being asked twice.
Step 5: Testing with Real Instruments
Before shipment, every machine should be verified with a laser interferometer for positioning accuracy and a ballbar for contouring performance. On custom machines we also run cutting tests with your kind of part in mind, and record the results. Request these reports by name in the contract: laser interferometry results, ballbar results, and a test cutting record. Generic "quality assured" language is worth little. A short video of the test running is even better than a PDF, because it shows the machine, the instrument and the operator in one frame.
Step 6: Packing and Shipment
The machine is drained, sealed, fixed to its base with proper fixation, and wrapped against moisture. Large machines travel on flat racks; standard VMCs and lathes go in containers. Photos of the packing and fixation are worth keeping, because any insurance discussion starts there. Sea freight from South China to Southeast Asia typically takes 5 to 10 days, with door-to-running commonly 15 to 25 working days.
What You Do as the Buyer
- At step 1: send complete drawings and real batch sizes.
- At step 2: challenge the specification sheet and fix voltage, control and tooling in writing.
- At steps 3 and 4: agree on milestone photos and any third-party inspection.
- At step 5: review test reports before the machine leaves the factory, not after it arrives.
A custom order is not a gamble when both sides work to a defined process. The factory's job is to build to specification; yours is to make sure the specification matches your parts before metal is cut.
