Cutting Tools and Spares Every Mould Shop Should Stock

Downtime hides in small items. The tooling, spares plus consumables an automotive mould shop should hold when the machines are imported.

When a machine stops in a mould shop, the cause is rarely the casting or the spindle. It is a worn wiper, a clogged filter, the last insert of the right radius, a toolholder that went missing two jobs ago. For shops running imported equipment - where a spare may need to cross a border - the stocking list matters even more. Here is what we tell our customers to hold.

Per spindle: the cutting chain

Keep a working set and a spare set of everything between the spindle nose and the cut: toolholders and collets matched to your holders' tapers, pull studs, balance-checked holders for finishing tools, and inserts in the radii your die programmes actually use. Buy inserts by the box for finishing radii, not by the ten - a surface pass interrupted by a tool change is the expensive kind of stoppage.

The spindle's own consumables

Spindle grease per the maker's schedule, drawbar springs if your machine uses them, spindle taper cleaning kits, and a set of sealing rings. If your spindle is belt-driven, one spare belt set per machine; a snapped belt can idle a machine for days waiting for a courier.

Guideways and protection

Way wipers and way covers wear with every cycle. They are cheap, they ship flat, and they prevent the guideway damage that is genuinely expensive. Keep a set per machine plus one in reserve. The same logic applies to lubrication filters and coolant pump seals.

Coolant and hydraulics

Coolant concentration refractometer, test strips, filters to the maker's specification, and hydraulic oils in the correct grades - stored, not ordered when needed. In hot, humid markets, coolant care is a daily task; the shops that treat it as one keep their spindles and pumps alive for years longer.

Electrical: small but stopping

Fuses, a spare battery for encoders and the control, common relays and contactors in your machine's brands, and one cooling fan for the electrical cabinet. Photograph the cabinet when the machine is new; identifying a relay by photo at midnight beats guessing.
