EDM Machine Customization: Tank Size, Controls, Setup

Tank size, control type, application setup are the three decisions in an EDM order. How VITOP's standard plus high-efficiency series cover them.

EDM sits at the end of the mould making chain, where the shapes that milling could not reach get burned in. Ordering one is less about speed charts and more about three decisions: how big the tank must be, which control suits your workflow, and how the machine will be set up for your electrode and workpiece mix. Here is how those decisions work across VITOP's EDM range.

ZNC or CNC: What the Control Decides

A ZNC machine moves in Z automatically while the operator handles X and Y positioning. It suits single-electrode burns, repair work and shops with skilled EDM hands. A CNC machine controls all axes programmatically, which opens multi-position burns, offset burns with one electrode, and unattended cycles. If your mould work involves many positioned features per cavity, CNC pays for itself quickly. If you burn one feature at a time, ZNC keeps things simple and costs less.

The Standard Series

The standard line runs three sizes, CNC-450/ZNC-450 through CNC-700/ZNC-700:

  • Work tank: from 1100x710x450 mm up to 1650x1100x630 mm.
  • Worktable: 700x410, 800x400 or 1050x600 mm.
  • Travels: X 450 to 700 mm, Y 350 to 550 mm, Z 200 to 250 mm.
  • Max electrode load: 120 to 200 kg; worktable load 1200 to 2000 kg.
  • Distance from electrode head to table: up to 850 mm on the largest model.

Machine weight runs from about 1450 kg on the smallest to 3200 kg on the 700 model, which matters for your floor loading plan.

The High-Efficiency Series

When cavities get larger, the high-efficiency series (CNC430N through CNC1880NN, six models) steps up:

  • Work tank up to 3500x1800x630 mm.
  • Working travel up to 1200x800x600 mm on the top model.
  • Max electrode weight up to 450 kg; max workpiece load up to 6500 kg.
  • Table sizes from 700x400 to 2000x1000 mm.

The step from 200 kg to 450 kg electrode capacity is not a detail. Large graphite or copper electrodes for automotive moulds are heavy, and the head and ram must carry them without drift.

Matching Tank to Mould Size

Work backwards from your largest workpiece. The tank must take the block, the fixture, and enough oil volume above the burn area for stable flushing. A useful check: block footprint plus 150 mm on every side should still sit inside the tank with the table free to move through its travels. Undersized tanks force awkward workarounds that show up as poor flush and uneven burns.

Floor, Power and Oil Planning

EDM machines bring considerations that milling machines do not. Check floor loading against machine weight, from about 1450 kg on the smallest standard model to 15 t on the largest high-efficiency unit. Plan the dielectric oil fill volume and a fire-safe storage spot for spare drums. Confirm your power supply against the machine's rated input at order time, particularly for export configurations, because oil pumps and coolers draw more than the frame dimensions suggest.

Application Setup: Where Results Are Won

Two machines with equal spec sheets produce different surface finishes depending on setup. Specify these at order time:

  • Electrode stock: graphite or copper, and typical electrode sizes, which shape the power supply settings you will use daily.
  • Flushing: your parts decide whether side flushing, submerged burning or both are needed.
  • Depth and orbiting: confirm the control supports the orbital and offset patterns your finishing strategy relies on.
  • Workholding: magnetic chucks and fixtures sized for your blocks, ordered with the machine rather than improvised later.

Tell us your largest mould block and your typical electrode weights. We will propose a model, tank size and control type, and explain the setup options so the machine arrives ready for your work, not for a showroom.
