Surface Grinder Options for Large Mould Plates

Table size, load capacity, wheel specs decide whether a surface grinder handles large mould plates. A guide to VITOP's standard plus large series.

Grinding is the quiet step that decides whether a mould closes properly. Plates that leave the mill with a few hundredths of wave or taper turn into fitting problems on the bench, hours of hand work, and seams that show on the part. Choosing a surface grinder for large plates comes down to three things: table size, load capacity and the wheel and spindle combination. Here is how they work across VITOP's grinder range.

Why Plate Grinding Decides Mould Quality

A mould plate is the datum for everything mounted on it. Cavity blocks, guide pillars and ejector systems all inherit its flatness. Grinding both faces of a plate after rough machining removes milling distortion and gives the plate a repeatable thickness, which is what lets cavity and core land on the same shut-off height. Shops that skip proper grinding pay for it in fitting time on every mould.

The Standard Precision Series

The precision surface grinder line runs three models, 618M/H through 306AHD/AS:

  • Worktable: 460x150, 460x200 or 600x300 mm.
  • Longitudinal travel: 470 to 660 mm; cross travel: 160 to 340 mm.
  • Max table load with chuck: up to 420 kg on the 306 model.
  • Grinding wheel: from 180 mm wide-range small wheels up to 350x40x127 mm.
  • Spindle speed at 50 Hz: 1450 to 2850 rpm.

These machines are hydraulic, which keeps longitudinal movement smooth and repeatable, and they cover toolroom work, small plates, inserts and sharpening tasks well. Machine weight runs from 850 to 2500 kg.

The Large Series for Big Plates

For mould plates and larger blocks, the large precision surface grinder line offers two models, 5010AHD and 84AHD/AS:

  • Worktable: 1000x500 mm or 800x400 mm.
  • Max longitudinal travel: 900 to 1140 mm; cross travel: 450 to 540 mm.
  • Max table load with chuck: 520 to 1000 kg.
  • Grinding wheel: 400x40x127 or 350x40x127 mm.
  • Spindle motor: 10x4 kW or 7.5x4 kW; spindle speed 1450 rpm at 50 Hz.

The step to a 1000 kg table load and a 500 mm table width is what makes full-size mould plates practical to grind in one setup. Machines in this class weigh 4000 to 6000 kg, so plan the foundation accordingly.

Choosing Table and Load Specs

Work from your largest plate again:

  1. Plate length plus overhang must fit inside longitudinal travel with the wheel parked at both ends.
  2. Plate weight plus the permanent chuck must stay below the load rating, with margin. A 1000 kg limit does not mean a 1000 kg plate.
  3. Check the distance from table to spindle centreline against your tallest fixture or blocking.
  4. Width matters more than buyers expect: a 500 mm table takes a full mould plate width without turning the part around, which removes a whole source of parallelism error.

Wheel and Spindle Notes

Larger wheels cover more width per pass and run cooler on broad surfaces, which protects flatness on wide plates. The four-bearing spindle arrangement on the large models (the 10x4 and 7.5x4 kW ratings) holds finish and wheel life under those heavier cuts. Match the wheel specification to your plate material and hardness, and keep dressing intervals consistent; flatness drift is usually a wheel problem before it is a machine problem. If your shop handles both small inserts and full plates, some buyers start with one large machine and keep the standard series on the shortlist for a second unit later, since parallel grinding capacity repays itself quickly once mould work grows.

Before You Order

Send us your largest plate dimensions, typical thickness tolerances and your block materials. We will recommend a model, chuck and wheel package, and tell you honestly if the standard series covers your work, because the right smaller machine beats the wrong larger one.
