Why Flat Bed Lathes Remain the Entry Point for Vietnamese Shops

Vietnamese shops commonly start with CK6140/CK6150 flat bed lathes. Why simple, rugged lathes make sense as a first CNC investment.

Walk through the industrial parks around Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City and the first CNC machine in most shops is rarely a machining center. It is a flat bed lathe. Exporters report that Vietnamese shops commonly start with CK6140 or CK6150-class machines, and there are good engineering reasons the pattern keeps repeating.

The market behind the pattern

China's machine tool exports to Vietnam grew about 22.4% in 2025 to roughly USD 480 million, and flat bed lathes make up a visible slice of that flow. The CK6140-class machine, with a 400 mm swing, is the sweet spot: big enough for the shafts, discs, sleeves and bushes that job shops cut every day, small enough to install, power and afford without a major project.

Why a flat bed makes sense as a first CNC

  • Operator transition. The layout, the toolpost and the manual handwheels feel familiar to a team raised on manual lathes. Training moves from clocking workpieces to writing simple programs, which is a smaller step.
  • Fixturing simplicity. Shafts and discs still clamp in a three-jaw chuck. Most early CNC work in a Vietnamese shop is exactly that.
  • Maintenance. Flat bed lathes are mechanically simple. A local fitter with basic spares can keep one running, which matters where service response can be slow.
  • Cost per capability. The entry price buys full turning capability. Nothing in the machine is idle.

What it does well, and what it does not

A flat bed lathe shines on one-offs, short runs and repair work: shafts, pulleys, flanges, gland nuts. Where it struggles is chip evacuation on long production runs and turret-based tool changes, which is exactly what slant bed designs solve. Once a shop wins volume contracts on turned parts, a slant bed lathe with a chip conveyor becomes the natural second turning machine.

At VITOP we build both flat bed and slant bed CNC lathes, and we see the split daily: flat beds for the flexible job shop, slant beds for the dedicated parts producer. Neither is the better machine in general. They serve different stages.

Two details that decide whether the first lathe succeeds

The first is operator depth. Train at least two people, not one, because a single trained programmer becomes a bottleneck the week he takes leave. Most suppliers can deliver on-site or online training; ask for it in the quotation rather than after commissioning. The second is tooling. A flat bed lathe without tool holders, inserts and a steady rest is a very expensive bench, and tooling, installation and training typically add 20-40% on top of the machine price. Lead time from order to a running machine commonly runs 60-120 days, so place the tooling order in the same purchase contract and the machine arrives ready to cut.

Importing notes for Vietnamese buyers

Machinery under HS Chapter 84 typically attracts 0-15% MFN duty in Vietnam, commonly 5-10%. With a Form E certificate under ACFTA, many CNC codes drop to 0-5%. The Form E must be issued by the supplier through CCPIT before or at shipment, only originals are accepted, and there are no retroactive claims, so put it in writing in the purchase contract. VAT of 10% applies on CIF plus duty. As a reference, on a CIF value of USD 50,000 the payable amount is about USD 7,750 without Form E versus about USD 5,000 with it, a saving of roughly USD 2,750.

For a first CNC investment, few machines beat a flat bed lathe on payback. Start where the market starts, then let your order book tell you when to step up.
