Fully Automatic Right-Angle Head for Gantry and Vertical Centers
A fully automatic right-angle head indexes under CNC control and returns to orientation for tool changes, letting a vertical machining center machine sides without re-clamping.
A right-angle head is the classic fix for one annoying problem: features that a vertical spindle cannot reach. Bolt holes on the side of a bed, oil channels in a mould base, a face that must stay square to a feature machined in the same setup. The fully automatic version, offered by VITOP as optional equipment, goes a step further than the manual type: it indexes and re-orients itself under CNC control, including the orientation required for the tool changer to grab and release tools.
What "Fully Automatic" Means in Practice
A semi-automatic right-angle head is set to its angle by hand before cutting. A fully automatic head instead carries an indexing mechanism that the program controls. The machine can call the head, rotate its output to a programmed angle, machine the feature, rotate back and continue. Just as important, it returns to the fixed tool change orientation automatically, so the automatic tool changer can swap cutters on the head without an operator walking over to re-position anything.
That single detail changes the economics. With manual repositioning, every head call costs minutes and invites mistakes. With automatic indexing, the head behaves like another tool in the magazine: the program selects it, machines with it, and moves on. On a batch of box-type parts with dozens of side features, that is the difference between a machine that runs unattended and one that needs an operator standing by.

When You Need One
- Box-type and frame parts: multiple faces machined in one clamping, where re-fixturing would lose datum or take hours with a crane.
- Mould and die work: side channels, clamp slots, cooling ports and parting-line faces at 90 degrees to the table.
- Batches with repeated side features: drilling and milling the same side pattern on many workpieces, where automatic indexing removes the operator from the loop.
If side features appear only occasionally, a semi-automatic right-angle head (VITOP also offers one) is usually the more sensible purchase. The fully automatic type earns its cost through unattended operation and frequent head use.
How It Mounts and Works
The head mounts on the machine's spindle head in place of the normal tool, or as a dedicated spindle configuration depending on the machine model, and the spindle nose drives the internal bevel gears that turn the output 90 degrees. Cutters mount in the head's output taper. The indexing and clamping of the head are handled by the CNC program with the machine builder's cycles, so specify the head when the machine is ordered rather than bolting one on later; the control integration, tool change logic and safety interlocks all need to be matched at the factory.
Before ordering, confirm the interface against your machine model and its Z-stroke, because a head adds overhang and reduces the clearance under the spindle nose. Ask for the output speed and torque figures for the head itself, not just the machine spindle, since gearing changes both. Check the maximum cutter diameter and length that clear the head body, which is always less than the bare spindle allows.
Practical Cutting Advice
Treat the head as a slightly softer spindle than the machine's own. Take conservative depths in steel, keep tools short, and run through-spindle or external coolant aimed at the cutting zone, because sideways cutting throws chips where flood coolant may not reach. Write side-feature programs with an entry move that confirms the head has clamped at the programmed angle; a few seconds of hesitation is cheaper than a crashed head.
VITOP builds gantry machining centers and vertical machining centers and supplies angle heads, including BT50 gantry versions, heavy-duty builds, extended heads and custom configurations, as optional equipment. If your parts have side features, send a drawing to VITOP Machinery and ask which head type matches your machine and cutting loads.
