Built-In Angle Head: Compact Side Machining on Engraving Machines
A built-in motor angle head drives its own spindle, giving engraving plus milling machines compact right-angle output for side and undercut machining in tight spaces.
Engraving and milling machines work in a cramped world: small features, fine tools, tight clearances. When a job needs a cut from the side, a conventional driven angle head bolted to the spindle nose is often too bulky for the space. The built-in type angle head solves this differently. It carries its own motor inside the body, so it does not hang off the machine spindle at all, and its compact output reaches features that a standard head cannot.
What "Built-In" Means
There are two families of angle heads. The driven type takes rotation from the machine spindle through gearing, which works well on large gantry machines with BT50 spindles and plenty of torque. The built-in type has the motor built into the head itself. You mount the head to the machine, wire it to the drive, and the head spins its own output at right angles without borrowing power from the spindle.
The practical consequences are real. Without the spindle drive train in the signal path, the head body can be slimmer. The output speed is set by its own motor and drive, not by gearing down the main spindle. And because nothing rotates through the machine spindle, the head can sit in positions where a driven head would foul the worktable or the workpiece.

When a Buyer Needs One
Think of the small side features that show up on fine parts: a slot on the flank of an electrode, a side port in a mould insert, undercut text or a chamfer that can only be cut horizontally. On VITOP's CM and GV series engraving and milling machines, which handle copper and graphite electrodes, high-gloss mould details and precision parts, a built-in angle head lets one machine finish those features without moving the part to a second setup.
- Electrode work: side ribs and parting surfaces on copper or graphite electrodes for EDM.
- Mould inserts: side gates, vents and small slots cut square to the main faces.
- 3C and precision parts: small housings and brackets with edge features too fine or too enclosed for a driven head.
How It Is Fitted and Run
The head mounts to the machine in a fixed position agreed at specification stage, aligned so the output runs square to the axes. Because it has its own motor, its spindle feed and speed are handled by the control as an additional axis or drive, so the integration is done by the machine builder when the machine is configured. Retrofitting a built-in head to a running machine is possible in principle, but the drive, control integration and collision envelope are all easier to sort out at the factory.
Before ordering, state the features you need to cut: their distance from the part's datums, the tool sizes, and the material. That determines the reach, the output speed and the torque the head needs. Also confirm the clearance envelope; the whole point of a built-in head is reaching into tight geometry, so a drawing of your worst-case part is worth more than any catalogue conversation.
Practical Advice
Keep cuts light. An angle head, built-in or not, is less rigid than the machine's main spindle, so small stepdowns and sharp tools matter more than aggressive parameters. Plan coolant delivery, since a sideways cutter in a pocket needs directed flow to clear chips. And set a collision envelope in the control for the head body the way you would for a probe; forgetting the head is there is the most common way to break one.
VITOP Machinery manufactures engraving and milling machines for electrode, mould and fine machining, and supplies angle heads as optional equipment. If you have parts that need fine side machining in one setup, email the drawings to VITOP and ask whether the built-in angle head configuration suits your parts and machine.
