Tool Magazine Basics: Disc-Type ATC for Machining Centers
The disc or umbrella-type tool magazine is the standard ATC on vertical machining centers. Here is how it works, what capacities are common plus when it is enough.
The tool magazine rarely gets much attention in a buying decision, yet it shapes how you run the machine every day. On most vertical machining centers, including VITOP's VMC range, the automatic tool changer is the disc type, sometimes called an umbrella or bamboo-hat magazine because of how the tools fan out around the spindle head. It is simple, proven and fast enough for the vast majority of work.
How a Disc Tool Magazine Works
The pockets are arranged in a disc mounted next to the spindle head. During a tool change, the disc indexes the programmed pocket to the change position, the spindle moves to it, and a clamping arm pulls the old tool out and pushes the new one in, both at the same time. VITOP lists a tool-to-tool change time of 3.5 seconds on its 24-pocket machines, which is typical for this design.
Tool selection can be fixed or random. With fixed selection you must return each tool to its own pocket, which wastes time on complex jobs. With random tool selection, the control tracks where every tool actually sits, so a returned tool goes into whatever pocket is free. VITOP offers random selection as an option on its disc magazines, and it is worth specifying if your jobs use more than a handful of tools.

How Many Pockets Do You Need?
Count tools per job, then add margin. A mould cavity job might use a rougher, a semi-finisher, several finishers, drills, a chamfer and a spot drill; fifteen to twenty tools is common. A bracket job can run in six. Most shops settle comfortably in the range covered by a 20 to 24 pocket disc magazine, which is what you will find on VITOP's standard VMC models.
You need more capacity when parts are complex, when you want to leave dedicated tools in the machine between jobs, or when you want the next job's tools loaded while the current job still runs. For those cases the options are a larger magazine or a twin-magazine layout; VITOP's double tool magazine machining centers carry 32 plus 32 tools for exactly that kind of work, and gantry machines take larger magazines again.
- Under 16 tools per job: a standard disc magazine covers you.
- Long mould jobs with many cutters: consider the double magazine machines or plan tool swaps at shift change.
- Unattended running: more pockets means fewer pauses for an operator to load tools, which matters if you want lights-out hours.
Practical Points on Tool Limits
Check three limits in the machine specification, not just pocket count. Maximum tool diameter with all pockets full (about 80 mm on a typical 24-tool BT40 machine), maximum diameter when neighbouring pockets are left empty (about 125 mm), and maximum tool weight, usually 15 kg. Big face mills and long drill bodies may need the adjacent-empty loading rule; your programmer must know it, or the tool change arm will collide.
Keep the magazine clean and the pockets free of chip accumulation, verify pull studs match the spindle specification, and label pockets if you use fixed selection. Small habits, but they prevent the majority of ATC faults on the floor.
If you are comparing machines, tell VITOP how many tools your typical job uses and whether you plan unattended running. The sales engineer can match the magazine capacity and random selection option to your actual workload instead of the default specification.
