Semi-Automatic Right-Angle Head: Affordable Side Machining
A semi-automatic right-angle head gives a gantry or vertical machining center horizontal milling capability at a lower cost, with angles set manually before cutting.
Not every shop needs a fully automatic angle head. If side features appear on some jobs but not most, the semi-automatic right-angle head is usually the smarter buy. It delivers the same essential capability, turning the cutter 90 degrees so a vertical machine can mill horizontal faces, but you set and lock the angle by hand instead of indexing it from the CNC program. VITOP offers it as optional equipment on gantry and vertical machining centers, alongside the fully automatic type.
What It Does and How It Differs
The head mounts on the machine's spindle head and is driven through bevel gearing from the spindle nose, so its output arbor points horizontally while the spindle points down. Cutters mount in the output taper and cut side faces, slots and holes that a vertical spindle cannot reach. The difference from the automatic version is the indexing: on this head, an operator sets the required angle or orientation manually and clamps it before the program runs. There is no program call, no automatic return to tool change orientation, and no mid-program angle changes.
That sounds like a limitation, and for high-mix batch work it is. But for a job where the head stays at one angle for the whole run, manual setting costs a few minutes at setup and nothing afterwards. For those jobs the semi-automatic head gives you horizontal machining at a meaningfully lower price, with less to go wrong because there is no indexing mechanism to maintain.

When the Semi-Automatic Type Is the Right Choice
- Side features are occasional: some jobs need a horizontal face or side slot, but most work is top-cut only.
- The angle is fixed per job: clamp the head at 90 degrees or the required angle once, run the batch, remove it.
- Budget matters: the automatic indexing mechanism is the expensive part of an angle head; removing it removes cost.
- Operator is present anyway: if the machine is not run unattended, automatic orientation saves little.
Choose the fully automatic version instead when side features repeat across batches, when you want heads called from the program like tools, or when you plan unattended running. For example, a structural-steel fabricator machining a few frames per week with side pads is a natural semi-automatic user; a mould shop cutting side features on every die holder is not.
Fitting and Running One
Specify the head against the machine model when the machine is ordered. The spindle interface, the added overhang on the Z-axis, and the control's handling of the head all need to match, and VITOP builds angle heads in BT50 gantry versions, heavy-duty and extended configurations as well, so the head can be matched to the cutting load, not just the taper.
In use, the discipline is simple. Set the angle, verify it with a dial indicator or test cut, and lock it properly before the first cut; a loose clamp on an angle head ruins both the head and the workpiece. Reduce depth of cut compared with the direct spindle, since gearing and overhang reduce rigidity. Direct coolant at the cutter, because sideways cutting throws chips away from flood flow. And record the setup, offsets and tool stick-outs used for each part family so the next setup is fast.
If you are unsure which type fits your work, send a typical part drawing to VITOP Machinery with a note on how often side features appear. That is usually enough for the engineer to recommend semi-automatic or fully automatic, and the right head size for your machine.
