Gantry Machining Center Guide: Fixed-Beam, Moving-Column, High-Speed

A buyer guide to the VITOP gantry machining center series: S, E fixed-beam models, high-speed G units plus moving-column machines for large plates.

Gantry machining centers are bought when a part outgrows a C-frame vertical machine: large moulds, structural components, machine beds, welded frames. VITOP Machinery builds four distinct gantry lines, and picking the right one starts with matching structure to workpiece. Here is how the series differ.

S Series: The Heavy Fixed-Beam Line

The S series is the flagship. Thirteen models run from the BTMC-S1012B up to the BTMC-S2508B/C, with X-axis worktable travel from 1200 mm to 8200 mm, Y-axis saddle stroke up to 3200 mm and Z-axis strokes of 800, 1000 or 1250 mm depending on version. Worktables range from 900 x 1400 mm up to 2200 x 8000 mm, and load capacity climbs from 1600 kg to a remarkable 30000 kg on the largest units. Spindles are BT50 across the range: belt-driven 6000 rpm versions, optional gear heads with 4.4:1 ratio for heavy cutting, and BT40-12000 rpm options where finishing speed matters. Spindle motors deliver 18.5 to 22 kW. Repetitive positioning accuracy holds at ±0.003/300 mm, which is impressive at this size. For large castings and heavy structural parts, this is the series to shortlist.

E Series: Economical Fixed-Beam Work

The E series covers medium and large workpieces with a more economical configuration. Nineteen models from the BTMC-E1216B to the BTMC-E1935B offer X travel from 1600 to 3500 mm, table sizes from 1000 x 1600 up to 1600 x 3700 mm and loads of 2000 to 8000 kg. The standard BT50-190 belt spindle runs 6000 rpm with an optional 1.5:1 ratio; several models can take a direct BT40-12000 rpm spindle or a gear head instead. Motor power stays at 18.5 to 22 kW and repeatability matches the S series at ±0.003/300 mm. As an example, the BTMC-E1502B gives you 2000 mm of X travel, a 1200 x 2100 mm table, 3500 kg table load and FANUC 0i-MF or Mitsubishi M80VA/VB controls.

G Series: High-Speed Gantry for Moulds

When the work is large but calls for speed, the high-speed G series changes the approach. Four models, from the BTMC-1210G to the BTMC-1613G, run a 12000 rpm spindle as standard with 15000 or 20000 rpm optional, X/Y/Z rapid traverse of 15/18/18 m/min and roller guideways. The BTMC-1613G is the detailed reference: 1600 x 1300 x 600 mm travels, a 1700 x 1200 mm table with 3000 kg load, BBT40 or HSK-A63 tool interface, 11/20 kW spindle motor, Mitsubishi M80V control with optional FANUC 0i-MF, and ±0.005/300 mm positioning accuracy. This is the machine for fast, precise machining of large panels and mould cavities in aluminium, graphite or hardened steel finishing passes.

ZX Series: Moving-Column for Large Plates

The moving-column ZX series takes a different structural route: instead of a fixed beam over a long table, the column moves along the bed, so the machine footprint stays compact even with long X travel. Three models from the ZX-2020 to the ZX-2040 offer column travel of 2200 to 4200 mm, 2000 mm saddle travel, a 2000 x 3100 mm table and 4500 kg load, with a BT50 spindle at 8000 rpm and 143 N.m rated torque. The ZX-2030 adds X-axis dual drive with twin motors, roller guides on all axes and ±0.002/300 mm repeatability, plus a 20-tool magazine. Engineering machinery plates and structural parts fit this line well.

Specifying Your Gantry

Match the envelope to your largest workpiece plus 20 to 30% clearance, check the table load against your heaviest part with fixture, and choose the spindle by material: gear head options for heavy roughing, higher-speed spindles for finishing. If you need side machining, BT50 right-angle heads and BF gearboxes are available as factory-fitted options.
