Gantry Universal Angle Head BT50: Machining at Any Angle

The gantry universal angle head with BT50 interface gives flexible angle machining on gantry machining centers. How it differs from a fixed 90-degree head.

A fixed right-angle head solves one geometry: vertical in, horizontal out. But large castings and moulds often carry features at intermediate angles, such as draft faces, chamfered mounting pads or inclined cooling surfaces. Re-clamping a multi-tonne part to tilt it is slow and risky. A gantry universal angle head solves the same class of problem with more freedom: the output can be set to other angles, not just 90 degrees, for flexible angle machining on the same setup.

Universal Versus Fixed Right-Angle

The fixed right-angle head is simpler and usually preferred when every job is a straightforward side cut. The universal head trades a little simplicity for flexibility. Its output orientation can be set over a range of angles, so one head covers side machining, inclined faces and intermediate-angle features on a BT50 gantry machining center. For a shop with varied work, that flexibility often decides the order book: the head follows the drawing instead of the drawing being redesigned around the tooling.

Typical Applications

  • Draft and inclined faces on large moulds that must stay square to a datum they cannot be re-clamped against.
  • Angled mounting pads and chamfers on welded frames and machine beds.
  • Mixed jobs where some features are side cuts and others sit at odd angles, all on parts too heavy to reposition.

Setup and Programming Notes

An angle change is a mechanical setup, so treat it like one. Set and verify the head angle with a reference, record the angle used for each job, and expect the tool length values to change with the angle. Program the first inclined cuts with a reduced feed until you see how the cutter enters. None of this is difficult, but it is the difference between an inclined face that lands on dimension and one that needs a second pass.

Also plan the cutting forces. On an inclined face, some of the load pushes the head sideways rather than up the spindle axis, so keep cutter overhang short and let the rigidity of the head carry the cut.

Ordering With Your VITOP Gantry

VITOP supplies the BT50 universal angle head as optional equipment for its gantry machining centers, alongside fixed right-angle, heavy-duty, extended and custom heads. If your workpieces include inclined features, send us a drawing and we will confirm whether the universal head covers the full angle range you need, or whether a custom build suits better.

Is the Universal Head Right for Your Shop?

A fair question, because flexibility has a cost in setup time. If more than half of your side work is plain 90-degree machining, a fixed right-angle head plus a standard end mill library may serve you faster. The universal head earns its place when inclined features appear regularly, when you quote a wide mix of work, or when one machine must cover jobs that would otherwise wait for a different machine. Many mould shops end up with both, using the fixed head for high-volume side cuts and the universal head for the angled minority.

Whichever you choose, document the setup. Head angle, cutter list, offsets and the first-article check belong on the job sheet. Angle machining punishes undocumented setups more than vertical work does, and a one-page record turns a fussy geometry into a routine operation.
