Heavy-Duty Extended Angle Head: Reaching Deep Cavity Walls
The heavy-duty extended angle head with BT50-BT40 interface combines long reach with high rigidity for deep-cavity side machining. Uses, limits plus ordering advice.
Deep cavities create a simple geometry problem. The wall you need to machine sits down inside the part, a vertical spindle cannot point sideways, and a standard right-angle head is not long enough to reach past the rim. The heavy-duty extended angle head exists for exactly this case: it extends the reach of the head so the output spindle gets down into the cavity, while keeping enough rigidity for heavy cutting.
What the BT50-BT40 Interface Means
This head uses a BT50-BT40 interface: the machine side connects through the BT50 spindle system of a heavy machine, and the output side carries BT40 tooling. That combination is deliberate. The BT50 connection carries the torque and clamping force needed for heavy machining, while the BT40 output keeps the extended spindle compact enough to fit into deep pockets and narrow openings.

Where It Is Used
- Deep mould cavity walls: finishing and semi-roughing side faces that sit well below the part rim.
- Large die pockets where the bottom fillets and walls need side milling in one setup.
- Structural parts with recessed machined faces that a vertical cutter or a short head cannot reach.
The economic argument is the same as with any angle head, only bigger. On a heavy mould or die, each avoided re-clamp saves crane work and a full alignment cycle. On deep parts, a second setup may not even be possible if the machine envelope cannot take the part in the other orientation.
The Reach Versus Rigidity Trade-Off
Extension costs stiffness, there is no way around it. The practical approach is to keep the extension no longer than the job needs, run the largest cutter diameter the pocket allows, and take the wall in two passes rather than fighting one heavy cut at maximum overhang. Listen to the cut: a rising whistle or a wavy surface is the head telling you the overhang has gone past what the operation should ask of it.
Also check coolant delivery. Inside a deep cavity, chips have nowhere to go, so direct the coolant jets along the wall to flush the cut and pull chips out.
Ordering From VITOP
VITOP supplies the heavy-duty extended angle head as optional equipment alongside standard, heavy-duty and custom angle heads. The right choice depends on your cavity depth, wall height and cutting loads. Send us the part drawing with the depth dimensions marked, and we will confirm whether the extended head covers it or whether a custom build is the better answer.
Checking Your Cavity Before You Order
A few measurements decide whether the extended head fits the job. Measure the rim width of the cavity, because the head body must pass over it without touching. Measure the depth from the top face to the lowest feature you need to cut. And measure the shortest distance from the machine spindle nose to the part in your actual setup, since the head adds length downward. Compare those numbers with the head’s envelope and reach; if they leave less than a few millimetres of margin anywhere, say so, because a small design change can recover it.
Tool choice inside the cavity matters too. Short BT40 holders with compact nuts buy back precious clearance, and directed coolant nozzles help where chips pile at the bottom. Send us these measurements with your enquiry and the confirmation comes back with real numbers, not assumptions.
