Custom Right-Angle Heads: Built Around Your Workpiece
Custom non-standard right-angle heads are made to order for special workpiece requirements. What information to prepare and how the ordering process works.
Most angle head applications fit a standard catalogue unit. Some do not. An unusual spindle interface, a workpiece with features in the wrong place for any standard reach, a head that must live permanently on one dedicated machine doing one family of parts. When the standard options stop fitting, the answer is a custom non-standard right-angle head, made to order around your actual requirements.
When Custom Beats Standard
A custom head makes sense when the alternative is compromise. For example, a mould shop machining a family of parts where one side face sits 40 mm deeper than any standard head reaches, or a machine shop whose old machine uses a spindle interface that no catalogue head matches. In both cases, buying standard and adapting the process around it costs more over a year than a head designed for the job. The head is made to order for special workpiece requirements, so the geometry serves the part instead of the part serving the tooling.

What to Prepare Before You Ask
The quality of a custom head starts with the information you send. Prepare:
- The spindle interface of the target machine, with the taper, flange and drawing dimensions if you have them.
- The workpiece drawing, with the features to be machined and their depths marked.
- The cutters you intend to run: type, diameter, and the cutting loads you expect.
- The orientation and output direction you need, and any clearance limits inside the machine.
- The machine model, so clearances and travel can be checked.
With these, the head can be designed around real numbers instead of guesses, and the first version is much more likely to be the last.
How VITOP Builds Custom Heads
VITOP Machinery runs casting, precision machining, assembly and inspection under one roof, with full OEM and ODM support and more than 13 years in machine tool manufacturing. That matters for custom work because the head body, gearing and interface parts are all produced and checked in-house, and each head can be run against the spindle interface it will meet before it ships. Custom right-angle heads are offered alongside the standard, heavy-duty, extended and gantry range, so if a standard unit can do the job, we will say so.
Send your drawings to us and we will review the application, confirm feasibility and quote the build. A short technical exchange at the start saves weeks at the end.
What a Custom Build Involves
A made-to-order head follows a simple sequence. You send the application details; the engineering team checks feasibility against the machine interface and cutting loads; you agree on a design with defined dimensions and performance; the head is manufactured, inspected and delivered with documentation. Timelines depend on complexity, so raise the requirement early in the machine purchase rather than after installation, when a standard setup might already cover half the need.
Two questions come up often. First, can a custom head keep standard tooling? Usually yes; most builds keep a common output interface so off-the-shelf holders work. Second, can it be serviced later? A head produced with documented drawings can be rebuilt and re-spindled by the manufacturer, which is another reason to work with a builder who keeps the design records in-house. Ask about spare seals and bearings when you order, and store them with the machine’s other wear parts.
