Custom Angle Heads for Special Reach and Clearance Needs

Some workpieces demand an angle head with special reach or clearance geometry. VITOP builds custom non-standard right-angle heads to order for these cases.

There is a family of machining problems that no catalogue illustration covers. A shoulder inside a housing that needs facing from the side, with only a narrow slot to pass the head through. A rib pattern on a casting where the output spindle must clear the next rib by millimetres. A recessed flange deeper than any extended head in the standard range. These are special reach and clearance requirements, and they are the reason custom right-angle heads exist.

What Counts as a Reach or Clearance Problem

A reach problem is about length: the cutting point sits further from the spindle nose than a standard head can extend while still cutting properly. A clearance problem is about shape: the head body, the housing or the cutter would collide with some feature of the workpiece or the fixture before the tool reaches the cut. Both are geometry, and both can be solved by designing the head around the obstacle rather than fighting it with longer, thinner and weaker tooling.

The Risk of Solving It the Wrong Way

The common workaround is a long cutter in a short head. Sometimes that works for light finishing. For real cutting loads it turns a rigid machining problem into a chatter problem, and the usual result is a scrapped surface, a broken end mill and a job that runs at half the planned feed. Designing the head to put the bearings close to the cut almost always outperforms any extended-tool workaround, because stiffness lives in the bearings, not in the tool overhang.

Defining the Job for the Designer

For a clearance-limited custom head, drawings matter more than words. Mark the section through the machining position, show the tool path you expect, and dimension every obstacle the head must pass. Add the cutter list and the material, so torque and speed can be sized honestly. With that package, the head design is a straight engineering exercise.

VITOP's Custom Head Service

VITOP Machinery makes custom non-standard right-angle heads to order, backed by in-house casting, precision machining, assembly and inspection, and full OEM and ODM support. The custom range sits alongside standard, heavy-duty and extended units, so every request gets an honest answer: a standard head where that works, a purpose-built head where it does not. Send the section drawing and the obstacle dimensions, and we will come back with a proposal for a head that actually fits your part.

Real Examples of Clearance Problems

These requests are more common than you might expect. A die shop needed to face a mounting shoulder 180 mm inside a housing, with a single 60 mm slot as the only access path. An engineering shop had to mill flat pads between cooling ribs spaced 45 mm apart. Another shop needed an angled cut under an overhanging flange that blocked any straight approach. In each case, a purpose-designed head put the bearings and the cutter where standard tooling could not go.

The lesson is that constraints can be engineered around if they are known early. When you mark up your part drawing, include the fixture and the machine column in the section, not just the workpiece. Collisions often come from the surroundings rather than the part itself, and a head designed with the full picture avoids a second iteration.
