Indonesia CNC Import 2026: SNI and Bahasa Indonesia Rules
From 1 July 2026, imported CNC machines need Bahasa Indonesia HMIs, fault codes plus manuals under SNI rules. Plus 12% VAT and demurrage risk.
Indonesia has always had paperwork-heavy imports, and from 1 July 2026 the bar rises again. New Ministry of Industry rules require imported industrial machinery, including CNC machine tools, to be localized for the Indonesian market plus tied to SNI import certification. For buyers this changes what you order, not just how you clear it.
The Bahasa Indonesia rules from 1 July 2026
From that date, CNC machines imported into Indonesia need:
- A Bahasa Indonesia HMI interface on the control, so your operators can run the machine in their own language.
- Indonesian-language fault code documentation.
- Localized maintenance manuals in Bahasa Indonesia.
Non-compliant equipment risks customs rejection. That is not a fine or a delay; it is a container sitting at the port with a machine inside that legally cannot enter the country.
What SNI certification involves
The language rules are tied to SNI import certification, and the requirements go further than software:
- Indonesian-language nameplates and labels on the machine.
- A permanent SNI mark.
- Importer information displayed as required.
The certification process involves testing at KAN-accredited laboratories and a factory audit at the manufacturer's site. Because the audit happens in the country of manufacture, coordination between buyer, supplier plus the certification body takes time. Start the process months in advance of your planned shipment, not weeks.
Duty and tax in 2026
Indonesia's MFN duty on CNC machinery commonly runs 5-10%. On top of duty, VAT is 12% in 2026, and a withholding tax applies to the import as well. Both taxes are calculated on the customs value including duty, so the combined border cost is higher than most first-time importers expect. Get your HS code classified early so your landed-cost spreadsheet uses real numbers.
The demurrage problem you cannot ignore
If your shipment is detained at the port, whether for a documentation issue or a certification question, detained containers can cost on the order of US$1,200 per day in demurrage. Two weeks of detention costs more than most of the certification work would have. That is the practical reason to have SNI and language compliance finished before the machine ships, not after it arrives.
Power, plugs plus the tropical environment
Indonesia's standard voltage is 230V/50Hz single phase, and plugs must meet Indonesian standards, so specify the electrical cabinet plus cabling accordingly. In operation, high humidity makes corrosion protection plus electrical board maintenance more important than in drier climates, and coolant needs more frequent attention in the heat. A voltage stabilizer is cheap insurance for the control system.
What this means for the machine you order
The language rules affect the order itself, so raise them at quotation stage rather than at shipment. The controller HMI needs a Bahasa Indonesia option or a localized interface, and the documentation package needs translation before it can pass certification. A supplier who already exports to Indonesia can confirm both quickly; a supplier who cannot will discover the problem with your container at the port.
Ask to see the nameplate layout as well, because the machine must carry Indonesian-language nameplates and labels, the permanent SNI mark plus the importer information as physical items on the machine, not just as documents in a file.
A realistic project timeline
Putting the pieces together for a first import: SNI certification with KAN-accredited lab tests and a factory audit takes months, not weeks, so start it as soon as you have a shortlist of suppliers. Machine production, ocean transit plus clearance follow. If your production plan needs the machine running by a certain month, work backwards from that date plus begin certification first, because it is the longest plus least flexible step.
If you are planning an Indonesian import in 2026, ask your supplier two questions early: can they supply the Bahasa Indonesia HMI and documentation package, and will they support the SNI factory audit? Send us your enquiry and we will confirm both before you commit.
