Large Precision Surface Grinder for Wider Workpieces

Large capacity precision surface grinder, models 5010AHD to 84AHD/AS, with 1000 x 500 mm plus 800 x 400 mm table sizes, loads to 1000 kg, wheels to 400 mm for large mould plates.

Most surface grinders stop at a 300 mm table. The moment your mould plates, die sets or machine components grow past that, every grinding job becomes a double setup, and double setups are where flatness errors come from. The VITOP large precision surface grinder series, models 5010AHD to 84AHD/AS, exists for exactly this work, with a wider table and the load capacity to match.

Two Models, Big Tables

The series offers a 1000 x 500 mm table or an 800 x 400 mm table. Longitudinal travel reaches 900 to 1140 mm and cross travel 450 to 540 mm, so a full-size plate is covered in one pass pattern. The maximum distance from table to spindle centre runs from 600 up to 750 mm, leaving headroom for chucks, fixtures and tall workpieces.

Load Capacity Is the Real Number

With the chuck fitted, these machines carry 520 to 1000 kg of workpiece. That is the figure to check first if you grind large die blocks, thick plates or fixture bodies. A half-tonne mould plate on a small grinder means shimming and stressing; on this class of machine it sits flat on the chuck and grinds true. Remember the load rating includes the chuck itself, so subtract the chuck weight when you plan the heaviest job.

Wheel and Spindle Specification

The series uses wheels of 400 x 40 x 127 mm or 350 x 40 x 127 mm, running at 1450 rpm at 50 Hz. A large wheel covers width in fewer passes, which shortens cycle time on big facing jobs and keeps heat input per pass low. Fewer passes also mean less risk of burning a hardened surface, which matters when the part has already been through heat treatment.

What This Machine Is Used For

  • Facing large mould plates and mould bases flat
  • Grinding die blocks and die sets after heat treatment
  • Machine tool components: slides, tables, spacer plates
  • Squaring large fixture bodies before further machining

Workholding on a Big Table

Large tables change your workholding options. With 500 mm of width and up to a metre of length, a plate often sits on the chuck without additional support, but heavy die blocks still benefit from squaring stops at the table edge so the job cannot shift under grinding loads. Take a light pass first to true up the clamping, then take your finishing passes. On a machine with this load capacity, an unevenly supported workpiece can be flexed by its own clamping, so check the part with a feeler gauge before the final pass and shim any rocking points rather than tightening harder.

Installation Planning

These are substantial machines, 4000 to 6000 kg and up to 2400 mm tall. Check floor loading at the planned position, confirm a route from the loading dock with door heights and floor strength, and allow clearance around the machine for wheel changes and coolant servicing. A large grinder also rewards a stable foundation: vibration from nearby presses or machining centres shows up directly in the surface finish, so keep it away from heavy impact machinery if the layout allows.

If your workpiece fits on a 600 x 300 mm table, the smaller precision grinder covers it at lower cost. Once your plates pass that size regularly, this series removes the double setups that cost you accuracy.
