Laser Interferometry and Ballbar Testing: Verified Before Shipment
What laser interferometry and ballbar tests actually measure on a CNC machine, and why you should ask for the test reports before your machine ships.
You can read a spec sheet in ten minutes, but a spec sheet never proved a machine accurate. Two tests do most of that work: laser interferometry for positioning accuracy and a ballbar test for circular motion. At VITOP every machine goes through both before shipment, and this article explains what each test actually measures and why you should ask for the reports.
Laser Interferometry: Measuring Positioning Accuracy
A laser interferometer compares the machine's reported position with a distance measured by the wavelength of laser light, which is as close to a physical standard as you can get on a shop floor. The axis moves along its full travel in steps, the laser measures the true position at each step, and the software records the error at every point.
From that data you get the numbers that decide whether your parts will come out in tolerance: positioning accuracy, repeatability, and the backlash and pitch error along each axis. These readings also feed pitch error compensation into the controller, so the machine corrects its own small errors along the axis.
Ballbar Testing: How the Machine Moves in Circles
A ballbar test is quicker but just as revealing. A telescopic sensor with precision balls at both ends is set between the spindle and the table, then the machine drives a programmed circle. While it circles, the sensor logs any deviation from the perfect radius thousands of times per second.
The resulting plot exposes problems that single-axis tests miss: servo mismatch between axes, backlash when an axis reverses, squareness error between X and Y, scale mismatch and vibration. A machine can have good positioning numbers on paper and still produce out-of-round bores; the ballbar catches that before it becomes your scrap bin.
Why You Should Ask for the Reports
Both tests produce reports with hard numbers, and a serious manufacturer will send them with the machine or on request. When you compare quotations, ask three questions: Will the machine be laser-verified before shipment? Will the ballbar results be included? Can I see a sample report before ordering?
The reports also become your baseline. When a machine that has run for two years starts leaving chatter marks, comparing a fresh ballbar plot against the shipment report tells you immediately whether the machine changed or your process changed. Without that baseline you are guessing.
How to Use the Reports as a Buyer
A few habits make the reports genuinely useful. First, ask that the test reports be listed as a delivery item in the purchase contract, together with the machine's serial number, so the documents belong to your specific machine and not to a sample. Second, review a sample report before you order; it tells you how the supplier measures and what they consider acceptable. Third, re-test after installation. Transport and handling can disturb geometry, and a ballbar check during commissioning confirms the machine arrived and was set up correctly at your site.
Also keep the reports on file for maintenance planning. When you schedule a re-test a year later, the comparison against the shipment values gives your team an objective view of machine condition, which is far better than judging accuracy by the finish on the latest batch of parts.
Verification at VITOP
Every VITOP machine is laser-verified before shipment, using laser interferometry for positioning accuracy and ballbar testing for dynamic performance. It is part of an inspection chain that also includes HT300 resin-sand castings, double ageing treatment and hand-scraped matched guideways, so the verified accuracy rests on a stable structure. Request the test reports with your inquiry; we will send them together with the offer, and you can use them as the baseline for every maintenance check that follows.
