OEM and ODM CNC Machines: Your Drawing to a Running Machine
OEM vs ODM in CNC machine tools: what VITOP customises, from spindle options plus angle heads to tables and controllers, and how the process works.
You have a part that no standard catalogue machine fits. Maybe the table is too small, the spindle lacks torque, or you need an angle head to reach inside a deep mould. This is where OEM and ODM arrangements come in, and at VITOP Machinery both are part of daily work, backed by casting, precision machining, assembly plus inspection under one roof. Here is how the two models differ and how a custom machine comes to life.
OEM vs ODM: What Each Means in Machine Tools
In an OEM arrangement, you bring the specification: you know which configuration you need and the machine is built to it under agreed terms. In an ODM arrangement, the manufacturer does more of the design work: you describe the parts, the materials plus the production volume, and the manufacturer proposes plus builds a machine around them.
For machine tools the line is practical rather than legal. Most projects sit between the two: you supply drawings and requirements, we supply the engineering that turns them into a buildable configuration.
For example, a precision parts shop producing pump housings may know it needs a larger table and a higher-torque spindle but nothing else; that is closer to OEM. A mould shop that only knows the cavity is too deep to reach may end up with a proposal involving an extended angle head, a modified table plus a controller it already uses; that is ODM thinking. Both end at the same place: a machine specified around the part.
What Can Be Customised
- Spindle options: speed, power plus taper matched to your cutting conditions, from high-speed finishing to heavy roughing.
- Angle heads and right-angle heads: BT50 gantry versions, heavy-duty plus extended types, or custom builds for a specific reach or part.
- Tables and travels: table size, load capacity plus axis travels sized to your workpieces rather than the nearest catalogue model.
- Controllers: controller brand and configuration matched to your shop's existing programming and maintenance experience.
Automatic chip conveyors and other auxiliary equipment can be added to the same build.
The Process, Stage by Stage
- Send your drawings and requirements. Part drawings, materials, tolerances plus expected output tell us more than any form. A rough monthly volume and your current machine's limits help just as much.
- Engineering review. Our engineers check reach, rigidity, spindle load plus cycle time, then propose a configuration with a quotation.
- Specification confirmation. You confirm the final specification in writing before production starts, so there are no surprises later.
- Build and inspection. The machine is built on HT300 resin-sand castings with double ageing and hand-scraped guideways, then laser-verified before shipment. Casting, machining plus assembly under one roof is what keeps this stage controlled.
- Delivery and support. The machine ships with its test reports, and our team supports commissioning questions afterwards.
Lead Time Depends on Configuration
A custom build cannot honestly promise one fixed lead time: an extended angle head, a special table or a different controller each change what has to be cast, machined or sourced. Lead time depends on your configuration, so the reliable way to get a real date is to send us the drawings and requirements and let us quote the build against them.
Start with the Part, Not the Machine
The most useful thing you can send us is the drawing of the part that started this search. From there we will tell you which of our nine product series fits your work, what needs customising plus what it will cost. Full OEM and ODM support is standard at VITOP, and the whole process starts with one conversation and one drawing.
