Right-Angle Head Types Explained: BT50 Gantry, Heavy-Duty, Custom
Right-angle heads turn a vertical machine into a side-machining tool. Compare semi-automatic, fully automatic, heavy-duty, extended plus custom types.
Any part with side slots, cross-holes or faces that need machining from the horizontal creates the same problem on a vertical machine: another setup, another fixture, another chance for misalignment. A right-angle head redirects the spindle output by 90 degrees, so the machine itself mills the sides. VITOP Machinery builds a complete angle head family, including custom versions, and the types differ more than their photos suggest. Here is how to tell them apart.
Manual Class: Semi-Automatic Right-Angle Head
The semi-automatic right-angle head covers horizontal surface machining with manual setting for indexing. The operator sets the orientation, runs the side operation, and returns to vertical work. It is the economical entry point, well suited to job shops where side machining appears occasionally rather than in every cycle. Same mounting family, same 90-degree output, lower cost, more operator involvement.
Fully Automatic Right-Angle Head
The fully automatic version indexes and orients itself under program control, with automatic tool change orientation supported. When side features repeat every cycle, the automatic head removes the operator from the loop: the program calls the head, positions it, machines the side and restores vertical orientation. For production parts with recurring side work, this is the version that earns its premium.
Built-in Type for Engraving-Milling Machines
Compact machines need compact solutions. The built-in type angle head integrates the drive for right-angle and side machining on engraving and milling machines, where a conventional bolt-on head would be too large for the small spindle environment. Typical uses: side ports on small mould inserts, fine side detail on precision components.
Gantry BT50 Family: Standard, Heavy-Duty, Extended
Gantry machines open up larger side-machining work, and the BT50 family covers it in tiers:
- Gantry right-angle head BT50. The standard version for BT50 gantry machining centers, handling regular side milling and drilling on large moulds and fabrications.
- Heavy-duty angle head. Built with high rigidity for angular output under heavy roughing loads. When you need to side-mill deep steps in a large casting at full depth of cut, this is the tool.
- Heavy-duty extended angle head. Pairs the heavy-duty build with an extended reach and a BT50-BT40 interface, made for deep cavity side machining where the wall stands far from the spindle nose.
- Double-direction heavy-duty angle head. Provides two-direction angular output for bi-directional heavy cutting, doubling flexibility on complex fabrications.
- Gantry universal angle head BT50. The flexible option: adjustable angles beyond a fixed 90 degrees, for workpieces that need several different approach angles in one job.
The right-angle milling head, as a simpler 90-degree output unit, rounds out the range for standard horizontal and side milling on workpiece sides and cavities.
Custom Right-Angle Heads
Real workpieces do not always fit standard heads. When reach, clearance or the spindle interface is unusual, VITOP builds custom non-standard angle heads made to order, tailored to the customer's spindle interface and to special reach or clearance needs. Common triggers: a cavity wall deeper than any catalog head reaches, an obstruction that forces an offset approach, or an older machine with a non-standard taper. Provide the spindle interface, the workpiece section and the operation, and the head is engineered around them.
Choosing the Right Type
Work through four questions: How often do side operations appear in the cycle? Manual setting is fine at low frequency; automatic indexing pays at high frequency. What cutting loads will the head see? Roughing demands heavy-duty builds. How deep must the reach go? Deep cavities point to extended versions. And is the application genuinely standard? If not, a custom build costs less than years of workaround setups. Send us the drawing of the part that causes you the most re-fixturing, and we will recommend the head type and mounting package.
