CNC Accessories Worth Specifying: Angle Heads, Presetters, Vises
Order accessories with the machine, not after. Angle heads, chip conveyors, tool presetters, vises, dividing heads: what factory-fitting saves you.
Buyers often spend weeks comparing machine specifications, then bolt on accessories afterwards from whoever ships fastest. That order gets expensive. Retrofitting automation and major attachments later commonly costs 20% or more versus 5 to 8% when factory-fitted, and roughly 35% of buyers now ask for automation-ready features at purchase, up from about 10% two years ago. The lesson is simple: specify the accessories at order time. Here are the ones worth thinking about.
Angle Heads and Milling Heads
Side features on a vertical machine usually mean a second setup on a horizontal machine or manual rework. An angle head solves it on the spot: the spindle output turns 90 degrees, so you mill slots, drill cross-holes and face sides without re-fixturing. VITOP offers a full family, from the BT50 gantry right-angle head through heavy-duty and extended versions to fully custom builds matched to your spindle interface. The universal milling head, adjustable in two planes, covers multi-angle work on gantry machines. Keep in mind that heads add mass and overhang to the spindle, so confirm the head type with the machine model at specification stage; mounting interfaces and coolant routing are best engineered at the factory.
Chip Conveyor
On steels and cast iron, an operator with a shovel loses the race. An automatic chip conveyor, chain plate or spiral type with PLC control, moves swarf out of the enclosure continuously, protects the coolant tank and keeps night shifts unattended. Specify it for any production machine cutting ferrous material in volume; lathes and machining centers both take the same argument.
Tool Presetter
Measuring tool lengths inside the spindle wastes cycle time and invites crashes. A tool presetter measures length and diameter offline, so the operator pre-sets the next tool while the machine cuts. VITOP's presetter serves machining centers, EDM and engraving machines alike, which makes it one of the few accessories shared across the whole toolroom. On shops running three or more machines, a single presetter usually pays for itself in reduced setup time within the first year.
Vises, Dividing Heads and Holders
Workholding decides how much of the machine's accuracy reaches the part. A precision machine vise gives rigid, repeatable fixturing for the small and medium parts that make up most VMC work. A CNC dividing head, servo-driven as a 4th axis, opens indexed and rotary machining without a full 5-axis investment, and it programs like any other rotary axis on the control. For tool holding, precision collet chucks clamp straight-shank cutters accurately, and the BT50-E-R32 extension rod reaches into deep cavities where a standard holder cannot. The humble tool holder unloading stand also deserves a mention: it protects expensive tapers during assembly and storage, and shops that use one see fewer out-of-tolerance holders.
BF Gearbox for Heavy Gantry Cutting
On gantry machining centers, the optional BF two-speed gearbox multiplies torque at low spindle speed. If your work is heavy roughing of large castings or welded fabrications, the gearbox turns a 6000 rpm spindle into a serious metal mover. Large-size variants serve the heaviest gantry applications. It is one of those options that is hard to add later and easy to specify on the order.
How to Build the Option List
Review your last twelve months of jobs and mark every setup that existed only because the machine could not reach or hold something. Each marked setup points to an accessory: side features to an angle head, deep pockets to an extension rod or extended angle head, indexed holes to a dividing head, unattended shifts to a chip conveyor and automation-ready interfaces. Send that list with your RFQ, and ask for the accessories to be fitted and tested before shipment rather than shipped in a crate.
