Why VMCs Dominate Southeast Asia's Machine Tool Demand

Vertical machining centers account for about 67% of Southeast Asia's vertical CNC sales. See the demand data and the practical reasons behind the region's VMC preference.

Walk through machine shops in Thailand, Vietnam or Indonesia and you will notice something: vertical machining centers are everywhere. The numbers back up what you see on the floor. Southeast Asia's vertical CNC machine market is worth about USD 7.42 billion in 2026, and vertical machining centers make up roughly 67.1% of regional vertical CNC sales. Here is why the VMC keeps winning, and what it means for your next purchase.

The numbers behind the demand

The regional market has grown about 31.8% since 2023 and is projected to keep expanding at roughly 9.6% per year toward USD 12.8 billion by 2030. Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia together account for about 68.5% of it, with Thailand the largest single market at around 29.1%.

End demand splits into three main streams. Automotive parts drive about 34.2% of demand, mould making about 21.7%, and electronics and 3C products about 18.9%. Orders for EV battery trays grew around 41% and connector moulds around 33% between 2025 and 2026, and both of those parts land naturally on a VMC.

Why the vertical format wins

There are practical reasons a VMC is the first big machine for most shops in the region:

  • Visibility. The operator can watch the cut, set up fixtures and probe parts without climbing a ladder.
  • Cost. A vertical machining center delivers production capability at a fraction of the price of a horizontal or 5-axis machine.
  • Footprint and foundations. Most factory floors in Southeast Asia take a VMC without structural work.
  • Operator availability. Training institutions across the region teach on vertical machines, so staff are easier to find.
  • Tooling ecosystem. Holders, cutters and accessories for BT40-class vertical spindles are stocked everywhere.

What buyers are asking for now

The baseline VMC is evolving. Roughly 35% of buyers now request automation-ready features, up from about 10% two years ago, and about 46% of surveyed manufacturers rank data-interface openness among their top three selection criteria. High-speed spindle options are also in demand as electronics work grows. When you compare machines, ask which of these are factory options rather than later retrofits.

Do not forget the tropical operating reality

Demand figures aside, a VMC in Southeast Asia works in conditions that differ from temperate factories. High humidity accelerates corrosion on Ways and electrical boards, so cabinet cooling and regular maintenance checks deserve attention from day one. Voltage fluctuation is common in many industrial estates, and a stabilizer is inexpensive insurance compared with a drive fault. Coolant life also shortens in heat, which makes coolant management part of your weekly routine rather than a monthly one. A machine built for export markets, with sealed castings and tested electricals, handles these conditions better.

Matching a VMC to your parts

Start from your workpiece. Match the machine envelope to your largest part plus 20 to 30% clearance for fixtures and tool travel. Choose the spindle by material: 12,000 to 24,000 rpm for aluminum and composites, 8,000 to 12,000 rpm with higher torque for steel. Pick the taper by cutting load: BT30 for light duty, BT40 for standard production, BT50 for heavy cutting.

VITOP Machinery builds vertical machining centers in three directions: C-frame machines for mould work, high-speed spindle versions for 3C and electronics parts, and general production machines. Every machine leaves the factory after laser interferometry and ballbar verification, and casting, machining, assembly and inspection all happen inside our 30,000 m2 facility.

The VMC's dominance is not a fashion. It matches how Southeast Asia actually manufactures, and for most shops it remains the smartest first machine to buy.
